The build will cost more in the end due to the fact that you will need to buy tooling as well as the parts to assemble the rifle. However, the build will most likely be of better quality.
Parts that you will need:
Upper Receiver ~$175-350
Compliance Parts ~$125
Receiver Wrench ~$50
Headspace Guages ~$40
Headspace Pins ~$35
If you want to know EVERYTHING needed to build a FAL, get the AGI video or DVD at American Gunsmithing Institute (http://www.americangunsmith.com).
Click on "Armorer's Courses" then on "FAL". The VHS costs $34.95, the DVD's priced at $39.95, plus $5 shipping for either.
I've seen the FAL video and the information they give you is encyclopedic. You'll find out what parts and tools you need, Inch vs. metric (not as much difference as you'd think), headspacing...everything. The price is cheap compared to what you might blow if you screw up the build.

If yu want a video, I would suggest that you not get the AGI video, instead get the video from Arizona Response Systems (http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com). Much more informative and will take you through the build step by step.

Figured I'd let him know up front. Unless you are gonna build a few, those tools add up quick.
I plan on building a few as well as a few ar-15's...
are the suggested tools useful on an AR as well? Or are they FAL/.308 specific?

Find some fellas around you that want to build FALs and share the cost of tools. You will eventually want everything you need for yourself but it helps in the beginning. I started the Derby City FN-FAL Owners Association (http://www.derbyfals.com/index.htm) to meet other people with shared interest in the FAL.
