Ok I picked up my first AR from a friend last night. It wasn't the same model I thought it was going to be, but I am actually happier now. It's a Bushmaster, lower marked xm-15 E2s. Flat top upper with removeable carry handle, fluted barrel. NOw some pics.

Can someone point me in a good direction for a good basic begginers "guide" to the AR? I have already figured out basic stripping down. Any areas to really watch when cleaning? What areas need to stay lubed?

Nice rig!!!! Congrats!!!

Here as good of a manual as Ive every seen. I always build mine from parts, and there is no real owner's manual. This ones real good IMO.

Nice lookin rig! Real nice!!

the plan was to build, but I couldn't pass on this. One other question I had is about getting extra magazines. What should I look for/avoid?

Stay away from USA brand mags. Only use USGI contract mags. You wont regret it. ;)

The LEO marked mags are USGIs, just there has been a run on them since the ban was lifted. Stock up!!! The WILL be another, farther reaching ban.

Look for the green followers. Even if I get USGI mags that dont have them, Ill buy them and change them out. They are self lubricating and allow for better feeding. The 20 rds, will have an alloy follower, and there is no need to change them out. Just the 30s.

Thanks. Ok time for my super newb question of the day.

I don't know if I just need to relearn form, or if I have a big head. I have never been able to shoulder a gun and have the sights line up. NOt iron sites or a scope. I guess with my line of sight the rear sits about a 1/8-1/4" lower than the front site. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a fix for this?

Left eye or right eye dominant? Nose to charging handle?

left eye dominant, at least 90% sure on this even though I am right handed. y nose is probably 1/2-1" from charging handle, hard to tell for sure.

On that particular weapon, the uncle teaches nose to charging handle. I just barley touch the charging handle to the tip of my nose and it lines up just fine. But then again, it was beat into me.

Well I think you discovered my problem. Using my right eye it does line up fine, my only problem is I can't shut my left eye only!!! Time to get a pirate cap and start training my left eye to shut and make myself right eye dominant!! Thansk for the simple fix.

As far as eye dominance goes. Pick an object on the wall and hold up your thumb to cover it up with both eyes open. Now, close your right eye, if your thumb dosnt appear to move, then you are left eye dominant. If it appears to move, then your are right eye dominant.

Either way, your ok, Im left eye domnant, somewhat ambidexterous, but write with my right hand. You just need to know. I recomend that you practice with both hands. The last 5 or 6 deer Ive taken have been off of my right shoulder. If I were limited to one way of shooting, they would still be walkin. It also gives you nearly 360 degrees dead zone from a tree stand. ;)

I guess it's time to start practicing shooting left handed, and training myself to be able to close just my left eye. Something soo simple yet I wouldn't of thought of it, thanks a million.

Since this has some pics, I've moved it to the gallery.
