View Full Version : 30-06
Well now i am looking for a bolt action rifle in 30-06, i want a remington 700 or a winchester model 70, which is the better model in the remington, i am looking at the cdl, and i know some are gonna say savage, but no way, my uncle has one and he is a child molestor (literally), and my brother is wanting me to get a remington 700 in a .308, what is the diff between .308 and 30-06 and which is better for big game like elk? thanks.
Well, the 30-06 will take down anything you hit with it. If you are wanting to hunt large game, the 30-06 is the way to go. Ammo aint cheap though. And about the gun, have you looked into the Remington 710? A friend of mine has one in 270 and I think it's a fine gun. You should be able to get one for under $400 with a bushnell 3-9x40 already on it.
yeah i looked at the 710 then read some reveiws but i kept finding that they think the stock felt weird, besides i really like the legacy and history behind the 700.

I wish I had a better memory, but I heard a couple gun guys at work talking about a new Remington rifle a couple of years ago. They said the rifle was cheap in cost, and the barrel could not be replaced, as it was swedged into the receiver. I did a little search on the net but couldn't find it. Was wondering if they were talking about the 710. You might want to check this out before buying. Also I found this recall on the Remington 710 http://www.remington.com/SAFETY/710/710.ASP
If you are considering elk hunting then go with the 30-06. I like the .308 for a deer only rifle. It has the same bullet, but smaller case. It doesn't kick as bad as the 06. I've shot them all day long. I can't do that with a 06.

i never shot a 710 but i played with one at shooters and everything about it felt cheap...the guys behind the counter frowned upon it also
I went to the shop tonight and asked the guys about it and they had nothing bad to say about the Remington BDL, but they did suggest the version of the 300 win round but i think that would just be too darn expensive to shoot, and i think i am gonna start saving up for a remington 700 now in 30-06, from what it sounds like you can hunt coyotes with them too if you have 55 grain's and you can hunt elk, so i think i made my decision so far :) :sniper:
The Remington 700 BDL in 30.06 is an excellent rifle. In 30.06, you can hunt almost anything. With the variety of gain bullets that are available, you can go from varmit to big game hunting. Ammo is readily available all over the world.
The .308 is also a great cartridge, but not as versatile in bullet grains as the 30.06.
If I could only own one gun that can do it all, it would be a 30.06 cal., hands down.
I agree about the 30.06. I too was in the market to replace a Remington 700 in .308 with a better caliber for elk, and I was looking at the 7mm Rem mag caliber.
I was checking ballistics tables for Remington ammo and Winchester ammo when I found this round in 30.06 that duplicates the same ballistics that I found for a Remington 7mm core-loct ultra round.

For every hunting situation, the 30.06 cannot be beat.
Here's one for you! When I was in Vietnam, I saw a guy take down an elephant with an M1 Grand.
For those that don't know, the M1 Grand was a 30.06 cal., used by our troops in WW2.
It was also used by the troops in WW1. The designation 30-06 is the caliber and year it was adopted by the military. 30 caliber adopted in 1906.

Yeah, but I can get 300 more FPS and 2-300 more footpounds and higher SD and BC out of 175gr 7mm rem mag factory loads. As much as I love the old ought six, it ain't a 7mm rem mag.
We were discussing a good "all around" cartridge. ;)

Yeah, I know. If I could have only one centerfire rifle, it'd be in 30-06.

30-06, in a CZ-550 rifle.
Skip the Remchestugar and Salvage and go streight to the design they all want to be like MAUSER.
Do you mean the German Mauser, didn't know it came in 30.06?

Hey all-
Just a few words on the .30-06. It has been the basis for more high perfomance cartridges in the past 100 years than just about all others combined. You name it, and it can pretty much do it. I guess the only thing it doesn't have going for it is that it doesn't have a flashy moniker, ie- super, short, fat, ultra, magnum, penetrator, destroyer, annihilator, terminator, vaporizer, etc.!! oh, and a sharp shoulder( they are useful, however)

Here, here.......three cheers for the 30.06
OK guys. After all this talk about the 30.06, I have a question.
My local gun store is offering a new in box Remington 700 BDL in 30.06 for $525.00
Should I buy it, or could I get a better price? <_<
All around the 30.06 can match some of the same performance for a good elk load to a good gopher load. Take your pick.

The CZ is a Mauser pattern.
There were a couple of countries in South Americia that equipped there armies with genuine German built Mausers, factory chambered for the Americian 30-06 cartridge.

My brother just called a couple hours ago. He just got back from elk hunting. He shot a large doe with his Remingto 700 BDL in 30-06 @ 237 yds. He said he shot one last year @ 400 yds using bipods in the setting position. He was hunting with a friend and wife. The wife shot one to with her 30-06. She shoots the 30-06 with a muzzle brake so it won't knock her down.
Here's to fresh meat in the ice box
What grain bullet was used in both the 237 and 400 yard shots?

Sounds like a good deal to me. I bought a used one with a 14 1/2 in pull, So I am having my stock shortened. When I get it back from H-S I will repaint it and post some pictures. I did measure the trigger pull today at 2 1/2 pounds.
Lots of luck with it! I look forward to the pics!
I've had a Ruger 77RS for 15 years, love it, but apparently Savage is a gem in the rough. I've shot a couple that were stock and sub moa. Ugly as sin, but if I wanted another bolt, Savage would be my first choice. :sniper:

Damn thats expensive. The place i bought my mini from had a remington 700 adl with iron sight in 30.06, exactly like the one i already own for $325. Id dont think it was used either.
Oh and what ever happened to the 700 ADL that remington had on there site its like they took it off?

30-06????
Check my handle!
And I agree about the Mauser platform. When I build one with the addition of a Winchester style three position safety and bolt handle, much better one piece bottom metal and push button floor plate, it truly is everything the Rugerchesters are hoping to be. The new CZ rifles do this very well, look good, are made in America! and priced right. They come in many claibers and configurations.

well i am now glad that i baught a 30-06, seems so versitile.

I know it's very late for an ancient thread, but what the heck,
I figured I would contribute some information.
WaffenFabrik Mauser never built a military .30/06 rifle, but
F.N. both built them new and rebuilt lots of 7mm. rifles
to employ the cartridges, most notably for Peru and
Brazil. Mexico both built and had rebuilt and rebuilt on
their own many Mauser '98 types in .30/06.
Likewise, Norway and several other countries converted
stocks of leftover '98's to .30/06.
Myself, I like the original loadings, and they are all very
versatile. This is not to say I PREFER them, but they
generally provide just about the same power envelope
and equal accuracy. 7x57 is especially versatile, and
one of the best-developed cartridges in the world.
7.92x57JS/"8mm. Mauser" suffers from being horribly
underloaded in the United States, so it's handloads or
first quality "foreign" stuff from Norma, RWS, S&B, or
others, if you actually want the cartridge to hit anything,
and hit it HARD. U.S. loaded bullets are .319, way off
specification, this being done just in case someone out
there is still shooting an unmodified M.88 commission
rifle. Which virtually no one IS.
I also rather like '98's in the shorter .308/7.62x51mm.
loading, but in general I am disinclined to convert
Mausers, just because I know how excellent the original
loadings are.
And the only reason I shoot less and less .30/06 as the years
wear on is the disappearance of cheap surplus ammo...
I am, after all, just about the ultimate Garand buff.
But most of those I shoot are now in .308, which also
prolongs the rifle's life by reducing parts fatigue overall.
