Hello All!

I just thought I would share the news!

After searching for a LONG time, I finally found, and purchased an HK-91!

I am so happy. I have wanted one for many years.

It is in excellent shape, and is a SHOOTER. NOT a safe queen. I am going to take it out tomorrow and put some rounds through it.

I got if for a good price as well. Well under the 2000 dollar mark.

According to the date code, it was made in 1980.

My Wife is happy that I finally got one, but this particular rifle she does not care for. All my others she likes, and shoots. This one however does not agree with her.

She calls it a "Big, Ugly Piece of Yuck" I think the reason she does not like it is because it is a 'battle rifle'. In her mind it is only good for one thing, and that thing is a terrible one.

Anyway, I just thought I would share with you all!

SUWWWWWWWWEEEEET! Nice piece. HK's are awesome... The thing I like most about them is the collapsible stock price tag is much much lower than it is for FAL's.. Magazines are cheap too.

Take off that carry handle and bipod, paint a woodland camo pattern on her and you'll have a dead ringer for mine, bought new in '79. Congrats! Don't forget to stock up on inexpensive 20-round mags for your rifle while they're still available. The steel ones are tougher, though the alloy ones are lighter to carry. Surplus mags are probably best, although I've had perfect function with a Tapco 30-round after-market version.

Thanks SURBAT6,

The rifle came with one original alloy 20 round magazine and two aftermarket THERMOLD 20 rounders. The THERMOLDS have NEVER been used. They are as pristine as the day they were made over 20 years ago.

I did buy FOUR original HK alloy 20 rounders from CHEAPER THAN DIRT. com. They were only $1.97 each. Can't beat that! They are in excellent shape. A couple of them are from way back in 1967! That's older than I am!

I also bought an original HK steel 20 rounder from my local dealer a while back.

I'm pretty well set for magazines for the old 91 now! Great weapon!

Eight mags is not enough!!! I must have 25 mags for mine. After function-testing and cleaning, I put away the spares in case one of the 7 mags I carry is damaged.
I'm semi-kidding here, but honestly, I can't think of a semi-auto rifle I own that has as few as 8 mags. My AK semi has about the fewest mags of any of them (11), but it's a backup-type for the HK. The 5.56's are backups for the AK (10 to 12 mags each). For my full-auto FAL Heavy-Barrel (since sold, darn it) I must have had more than 30.
Listen to wisdom, Grasshopper. You can never have too much ammo or too many spare mags (especially the hi-cap variety). You never know when the antis are going to slip another mag ban or ammo ban or "assault weapon" ban or this-ban or that-ban, under the guise of protecting the public. Prepare while the goodies are plentiful and cheap and you can laugh at the anti-gun idiots (unless, of course, they write an Australia-style ban that requires a turn-in of all the (pick a weapon), in which case, you were screwed anyway (Get out the shovels, boys! Don't bury the toys too close to the house! Make sure they're greased good and well-packed!).

I thought so too, but the Wife would rather have dinner there, so I had to put the HK in the safe.

SURBAT6,

OK, OK, I'll order some more magazines for the HK. CHEAPER THAN DIRT, $1.97 each here I come, AGAIN!

You have much to learn, Grasshopper, but you show potential.
One of the things you'll learn is the HK91 is not kind to brass. Fired cases have longitudinal stripes from the chamber fluting and a thumbnail dent from smacking the rear of the ejection port...that is, if you can find any fired cases in the next county where the rifle flings them (these ugly markings have no perceptible effect on reloading). Many years ago, before I learned enlightenment, I mounted an ejection port buffer to eliminate that dent (nothing I could do about the stripes, so I ignored them). Worked great, until it flipped an empty back in the action and jammed up the weapon. Sold it as soon as I found a suck..., I mean buyer. Tried a brass catcher, too. There used to be a nifty one available, essentially a plastic box that snaps on to the receiver. You probably guessed it already - one case bounced right back into the open receiver - jammed again. That box is still available, if you're interested. Also, the brass catcher was a bit LOUD, rattling about like you'd figure something of hard plastic with brass casings would sound.
Another thing you'll learn is the HK91 will eat anything in the 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester caliber, and I do mean ANYTHING. Its appetite makes an AK look finicky.
I've fired (and the action functioned) with military ball, tracer, AP, 150 grain SP's, 165's, 180's, and handloads topped with a 170 grain .30-30 bullet, a 110 grain FMJ round nosed carbine bullet, and a 147 grain FMJ bullet a buddy loaded base-forward as an experiment, then chickened out of firing in his M-14 (I grabbed it, loaded it and shot it with no ill effects to gun, shooter, or - evidently - target).

It was very nice to meet you and the other gentleman as well.

Thanks for the compliments on my HK.

After you left I put a magazine through it rapid fire. Man, that barrel got HOT!

It shoots very well, with absolutely no problems. It does what it is supposed to!

What a good time, I relieved so much stress today just sqeezing that trigger!

Just a point of interest. The rifle kicks the brass about fifteen feet forward, and to the right (of course). I found every one of my cases. They were all bunched up together.

I will tell my Wife what you said!
