North east lower Michigan. My back yard looks similar (even more open), but that pic was taken about 7 miles away, while deer hunting.
It's about 125yd to the near treeline, and 440 to the far tree line.
Rifle is chambered in 30-06, Mark-X Mauser receiver, 25" #5 conture Shilen barrel, trigger by Canjar, optics by Shepherd

They take a little getting used to, and some people find the reticle to be a little busy. Other that that, there everything the ad's claim they are. While I haven't had a need to test their warrenty, reports from those that have are excelant.

Tailgunner,

That's beautiful... any chance we might get to see the rifle from a sideview? :D I've been wanting to build a Mauser long range project rifle for a while now. But I just don't have the finances to do it right, so I'm holding off for right now. I don't wanna skimp. Did you do yours yourself?

My gunsmith put it together for me. We started with a NIB Mark-X receiver, turned a Shilen 1-12 30cal select match down to a 22" heavy sporting conture (that was the origional barrel, after burning it out we replaced it with the 25" #5 shown here). The trigger and tang safety I purchased directly from Canjar, and the stock from Fagen (pre-midway era). The receiver was trued/squared before any other work was done.
I'm lucky in that I have a very good smith to work with. He's built a couple 1K record setting BP underhammer receivers from scratch, along with everything for his personal bench guns except for the trigger and barrel, designed and builds a very effective muzzle brake (good enough that the Marines? bought a couple thousand of them).
I used the "budget payment plan", in that I'd take him some money every payday and when there was a big enough pile he'd order another part or do some of the labor. Total time this way took about 2 years from start to finish but didn't hammer the pocket book near as hard as you'd think.
If I was to advise you on "best way to go" I'd say 1) find a top gunsmith that likes the type of receiver your wanting to use. 2) Follow his advise on component selection. 3) premimum barrels are only slightly more than cheap barrels and are less likely to give you problems.
