View Full Version : Rem. Model 700 DM or Fixed Mag?
I'm looking to buy a Remington Model 700 BDL in 30.06 for all around use. My question is this. Which is better, the Detachable Magazine or the Fixed Magazine?

Well, the stock retains a lot more rigidity without having a magwell in it, which I believe is why they don't put mags in a lot if the bolt guns. Also, are you really going to need it? I had the same question when I was considering my purchase, but how many shots are you going to be making with a bolt gun in a short period of time? It's not a CQB weapon, so I decided to go without the mag well.
-EDIT-
Of course, I did decide to go with a Savage over a Remington.

Blender made a good point. You will sacrifice rigidity if you go with the detach. mag. I don't have any reference for this, but i vaguely recall reading somewhere about guys with detachable mags having trouble with feeding... something about the clip not seating all the way. Anyway, if you believe in "Simpler is better", the fixed mag is probably for you. Be sure to post a pic as soon as you get the new rifle! :D

I read that somewhere over the weekend, on another board somewhere. Guy had a Remy with an outward floorplate, and he got an aftermarket stock that did away with the floorplate. He said he called the manufacturer and they told him the reason they got rid of it was to retain some of the stock's rigidity. He was happy.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll go for the internal mag and not the removable one. Your reasons seem to make lots of sense.
Now BlenderWizzard has me thinking about the Savage instead of the Remington.
I had a Savage years ago but sold it. I'm sorry I did, it was a tack driver but I needed the money. I thought I'd give Rem. a try, but now I'm wondering if I should.

Remy is twice the price, and Savage has a better barrel and trigger. Check towards the end of this post http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.p...pic=12990&st=30 (http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12990&st=30)
I'm between a rock and a hard place. This place by me called Galyans is going out of business. He has two Rem. model 700's BDL, 30.06 for $ 475.00. each.
Which should it be, Savage or Remington? :(

Buy the discounted remingtons, resell them at online auction, buy a Savage and some ammo with the proceeds!
Actually, I don't know what I'd do in that situation. I was a Remington fan for a few years before I went to Savage. Remington still makes a nice rifle, but Remington is considered the better value.
Ok, just did a price check on the 700 BDL...MSRP is $716. Take off about $150 to bring it to about $625, and you're still getting a really good deal. But then again, here's a Savage for $450...and it comes with the AccuTrigger. Walmart.com (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2685018) It pretty much comes down to personal preference on this one. Hope I haven't just confused you! :P Good luck making your choice! :D

tpw,
i don't think the 700 bdl has a removable mag but it has a floor plate to unload without chambering all unused rounds. i believe the 700 adl does not have the floor plate and that is about the only difference in adl/bdl except the bdl has adjustable trigger and fancy finished wood with black end caps on forearm, pistol grip and butt with a little white piping on the forearm.

tpw,
all of the latest reports in the rifle world have nothing but praise for the "new" savages in all areas of interest. the latest reports on the rem 700's has been acceptable but say they are not as good as the old ones.
because you can not be sure what you are getting in a used rifle and to equal the price/quality you would have to by a used rem to equal a new savage. i would get the savage. the price is right, it is brand new, the factory will fix any problems you find with it. ;)

Oh, ok. The reason I asked is that there is a Galyan's near me, but I don't think they are going out of business. i live near Atlanta.
OK guys I'm convinced. I'm going for the Savage. I want one with sights in 30.06. Which one do you recommed?
About Galyan's....I heard they are being taken over by Dick's. I don't know if I was being put on, but that's what the clerk said when I asked him. Everything in the Long Island, New York store is going out the door for 50% off, EXCEPT rifles and ammo. How' that for a kick in the buttstock!

I have a remington 700 adl synthetic in .308. Its not a bull barrell and i got under half inch groupls out of it at 150 yards, out of the box with a BSA 12 power scope and a bipod, no vise. Ive talked to dealers about savage and remington...had one guy say that the remington was a little more stout...but i still think both guns are great. Although I wouldnt trade my remington for a savage any day of the week.
