My uncle has a paratrooper SKS and hates the attached magazine, but he is too cheap to buy an AK-47. I told him about a conversion kit for using AK mags in an SKS, but I don't know of any web sites that I could find it. I would appreciate any help.

It's a myth and doesn't exist. Now, SKSs that accept AK mags exist, but they're more expensive than an AK. You also might be able to find a gunsmith willing to convert your SKS, but it will cost a bit. They need to: cut the bottom rails off the bolt, weld up a ledge on the front of the receiver for the mag, rework the mag release.

Mine is detachable, but it only takes the removable sks mags with the big lip. From what I have heard its very labor involved to get it to take an ak mag. I've also heard its illegal for that. anyone know if thats true?

As long as you keep it nice under 922, it's legal. That probably means cutting off the bayonet lug and not adding a pistol grip.

no, this modification is not legal. by making the rifle capable of accepting AK mags you have created another weapon according to federal law. tell him to 1, get detachable mags, 2, sell it and buy an sks that will take AK mags (they are out there), or 3, learn to deal with it, buy some stripper clips, and go that way. those are about your only 3 options

edit. there is a 4th option. there was a kit made by a company called "hitach" or something like that. they made a kit that plugged up the hole where the "duckbill" goes, and provided their own special mags. ak mags could not be used at all with this system. and it was rather pricey IIRC. like 100 bux for the kit and one mag, and like all subsequent mag was somewhere around 30 or so bux. not worth it IMO. the only thing that kept this kit legal is that it did not permanently alter the weapon, i could be returned to stock configuration.

Yeah, I looked into getting that kit some years back, and it was WAAAAY too high. Now, I'm all for making money, but I love how people will mill a small piece of aluminum or steel that has no moving parts and is basically just a shaped piece of flat metal and the charge $100 plus for it. It could have been made and sold for $50 and they would have probably sold a ton of them. Or, I wouldn't mind paying $100 for the adapter, if it would then use regular AK mags. But when I could easily just go buy a brand new SKS for what they would charge for their adapter and mag, what do you think I would do?

I guess I'll just tell his cheap ass to trade it in on an AK. Thanks guys.
