Thinking about making an SKS my next major purchase. My question about them has to do with the magazines. Are they truly detachable or are they fixed to the weapon? I've seen advertisements about some SKS mags that say "detach" next to them and was wondering if there were some that were and some that weren't.
IMHO The detachable after market mags are complete garbage and a waste of time and money.
I have a Russian SKS and thought about converting it into the high cap detachable mags. After speaking to some knowledgeable people and reading lots of reports on it, I've decided to leave it original. Perhaps some have had good luck with it, but most of the comments I heard were very negative.
The Chinese OEM 20 rounders are neat (and work.)
But they aren't detachable.
I have a Chinese 20 round fixed mag that works great.

Are the Chinese 20 round fixed mags metal or plastic?

Well, that being the case, where's the best place to get one of these fixed 20rd mags?

Gun shows.
They have a star on the side.
Mine is metal and it works great. It's just like the standard metal 10 round mag, but it holds 20 rounds. It's just the perfect magazine for the rifle.
Will the Chinese 20 round fixed mag. fit into a Russian SKS without any alterations?
Also, could anyone recommend a good quality scope base for the SKS?

Go to APWCOGAN. com. Cogan is a gunsmith, I work near their location and stop in from time to time. As of like two weeks ago they had a box of chinese 20 rounders. You might try calling them. It takes them forever to get their email. The ones I saw were all in good condition.
