I have $300 (plus tax) to spend on a new 9mm handgun.
Which should I go for?
I like the DA feature of the P89, as well as its decocker.
I like the simplicty of the BHP design.
I figure I am a winner in either case.
Ideas? (no, I cannot afford both)
I can only speak to the P89. It is rugged and reliable. If I had to replace my P89 for some reason I wouldn't think twice about purchasing another.
Go with the P89 and you want be sorry. You can feed it anything and it never complains,it just keeps on shooting :2guns: .If you have a problem with it, Ruger will fix it without a hassle.
BTW, just ordered me another one!! :D
Latter.........sd550
Ruger, period, end of conversation.
Here's my $0.02. If the Feg you're talking about is the true HP clone, the PJK-9HP, then you hae a bit more of a difficult decision. Most of the PJK-9HPs I've encountered have been solid and accurate and have functioned very well, even with the relatively inexpensive SA 17 rounds mags. The only mod I did to mine, before trading it away, was to remove the mag disconnect. That help the trigger break clean and reduced the pull.
I mentioned I did trade it away. I traded for a Ruger P95. The buddy I traded with was having difficulty working with the DA/SA trigger of the Ruger. However, when he shot the SA Feg, he didn't have any issues. Still have the P95. Actually I have 2 now. :)

I don't really know anything about the FEG PJK, but I do like my Ruger. It's tough and most people I talk to say they've never had one jam on them. Plus, when you're done shooting, you can turn it over and drive a nail through a 2X4 (just teasing)
I second Mbott's suggestion about the FEG High-Power clone. I got one and it works like a champ (trigger pill was a bit heavy, though, until I worked it over). It's like an FN high-Power without its fine finish.

... And the cost.
Saw a NIB FEG PJK-9HP at a show in Columbus, OH today. Guy selling wanted $330.00 with only one mag. Just a bit high, but they're very difficult to find NIB any more.
I keep watching the FN HiPower Forum (http://www.fnhipower.com/modules.php?name=Forums) to see if there's any overall agreememnt on the Arcus line of HiPower clones, but that one still seems to be up in the air right now.
Not that I need a new HiPower .. or clone. I picked up a Mk III in .40 earlier this year and that gun shoots like a dream. :)

Are you sitting down? My FEG High-Power cost $220, new-in-the-box with TWO hi-cap mags back in...was it THAT long ago?...'97. Dang - must be gettin' old.

I remember. Unfortunately, when I decided to pick one up, they were no longer being made by FEG or imported by KBI, so the law of supply and demand took over. Mine ended up being just a bit more expensive than yours...when I finally found one.
Like I said earlier, I picked up a Mk III in .40 early this year and that pistol is one of my favorites. The HP design fits oh so nice in the hand.
