View Full Version : Ruger's Underated P-Series,Why?
After owning several makes of pistols I've came to settle on the Ruger P-Series,but someones always kicking them around. Is it because 99% of the LEOs carry a different brand or is it that Ruger doesn't spend all their advertising dollars on the P-Series?Anybody able to answer these questions?

I like my Ruger pistol as well. Part of it was the price, but also I've never had anyone tell me that they had a Ruger jam on them. I know that jamming on Glocks is rare, but I have heard about it. I think Rugers can feed just about anything (ammo) with no problems.
I think one reason law enforcement is more apt to carry a Glock is the weight issue. The Ruger is always going to be heavier. I don't mind though. I feel like my Ruger P-89 is a tougher, more reliable pistol than just about anything out there.

AMEN!!!!...the only ammo that didnt work in my p90 was wolf...the lead was actually to big... the slide would not close all the way and the bullet would get stuck in the end of the chamber,im glad i noticed before i fired one off...also had one failure with those aluminum jobs but i had no place putting either of that trash in my burner in the first place...the aluminium shells actually cut a groove in my follower and i hear it would eventually cut one into the ramp...but other than that i wouldnt trade that sucka for anything....the gun seems unbreakable.

Some folks are missing out on a great, accurate and lifetime gun with routine maintenance. Its not expensive nor styleish like some imports, nor does it cost enough to brag about what you paid for your handgun.I guess my forum name (Roogster= Rugster im a Ruger fan and an avid collector.I have every model of Firearms they make except for 3 Models. After this so called assault weapons ban set Ruger said they would not sale any Hi cap Mini-14 Mags to the public.Which did not effect me directly because Im an LEO and can buy them,I just happened to run into a deal on 20 RD Factory Mini-mags a few yrs ago.But if thats the way they feel towards the law abideing citizen I said crap on them I will not be buying any more Ruger Firearms. This does not apply to their P-series Handguns, they are saleing Full capacity Mags for them.Another strike for Ruger was when Bill Ruger himself stated before congress no citizen needed a magazine that would hold more than 10 RDS.I own Sigs,Glocks,Beretta's and many other guns, but my P-Series Rugers are as reliable, durable and accurate as any of the other guns I own.
Best!! :usa:

You need to do a bit more research. Ruger never supported a 10 round magazine ban. His and SAAMI's position in '89 was for a 15 round limit. It was the Clintonistas that took the ban and made it 10 rounds in '94.
As to Ruger P-series pistols, I currently own 4: 2 P95s, a P97 and one of the new P345PRs. All are solid, accurate and dependable. The P345PR has become my night stand gun and is equiped with a Streamlight M-6 unit.

Rugster,
I know how you feel about the way Ruger has/is doing on certain issuses, but S&W sold out to Klintonism,Colt bankrupted into the state of CT & tried to push their smart gun technology,Taurus is still working on their smart gun technology,H&K has issuses, and at one time Glock was ballistic fingerprinting their guns.So who knows what is going on?
I own several Rugers and will be buying more in the weeks ahead.Dollar for dollar they can't be beat.
Thanks............sd550
Ruger centerfire pistols have never appealed to me, kind of like how Smith and Wesson centerfires never tickled my fancy either. I have a mini-14, a 10/22, and a mark II. I am satisfied with all three Ruger products, but I can not same the same for some of Ruger's policies. Even if Bill Ruger suggested 15 rounds or less in magazines for John Q. Public, he never made a ten rounder for the mini-14 even though Ruger could have done so legally during the AWB years.
I will not own any firearm with a magazine disconnect, period. The Mark III and other current production Ruger pistols have this feature. Trial Lawyers and Safety Nazis be damned. To me, a gun is a tool and should be simple and as user friendly as possible. Keeping the weapon out of the wrong hands to prevent it from being used by an unauthorized individual is my responsibiliy and no one elses.
I used to describe Ruger firearms to prospective buyer by saying "Ruger is the Buick of the Firearms Industry. No, it isn't a Cadillac but it ain't bad." Ruger is a rough, tough and dependable gun but I don't care for all of the legalize writing all over the new ones.

They are a bit clunky feeling compared to some other pistols. They are good guns though.

Wow, you must have one heck of a time buying an automobile without either ABS, seat belts or air bags.
Do I particularly care for mag disconnects? No really. I don't like the additional cost they add to the price of a gun. Do I understand why some maker feel it's necessary to add such items. Yes, I think I do. Until such time as the bleeding heart, or is that blood sucking, lawyers and the "I'm not responsible: who can I sue" consumers are gone, items like mag disconnects will be more the norm.
How much did that lady sue McDonald's over spilled hot coffee?

I grew up shooting a Ruger MKII. Those little pistols are so accurate, they make part-time shooters look good. Well, I've gotten my own kids raised now and the only brand I have bought is Ruger. I own two of the new "lawyer proof" designs and I haven't noticed any problems with either of them. Just last weekend, I got a good deal on a mint Mini 14. Had never shot one of those types of rifles, but I really think I'm gonna like it. I don't think I'd call them Buicks. Maybe they are the Chevy trucks of the gun world. They're modern without all the fancy bells and whistles of some of the "Cadillac" guns.
