Back when the "10" was new I picked up a smith 1006. That was the beginning of the end. Since then, I have bought and sold many 10s,(mostly bought and not sold) I think the 10 is my favorite self defense caliber.

I live in northern Minnesota and this year the whitetail deer are quite plentiful. By the middle of the first week of hunting I had already bagged 3 nice deer. My wife and son, who also hunt, had so-far, been unsuccessful. They told me I was no longer allowed in the woods with my rifle. I did some negotiating and they allowed me to carry a handgun. I chose my Colt, gold cup, delta elite 10mm. I did several drives for my son with no results so I told him that I was going to head back to the house. On my way back, I decided to sit the last 45 minuets of the evening hunt on my wife's vacant stand. I climbed up, got comfortable and un-holstered my 10. About 15 minuets had passed when I heard some sounds coming from the brush. Just as luck would have it, my cell phone started to buzz in my shirt pocket. Fortunately I had put it on the "vibrate only mode". To me it seemed as though the vibrations should have been heard for several hundred yards but apparently they weren't. Shortly after the phone quite "ringing" I saw a small buck step into view about 50 yards away. By now it's 5:00 pm, about 10 minuets after sunset, about 20 minuets from the end of legal shooting time. I have never taken a deer with a handgun before and this seemed like as good of an opportunity as any. With the diminishing light, I didn't want to be tracking this deer. I decided to aim for his spine just above his front shoulders. I felt that if I missed "high" it would be a clean miss, and if I was "low" it would take him in the front shoulder and at least I would have time for a second shot. The sights looked pretty coarse on the deer at 50 yards. I squeezed the trigger and BANG, down he went. I had hit him just above the front shoulders, hitting the spine. It was like getting my first deer, my son and wife didn't quite share my enthusiasm, getting the deer was just the start of a lot more work. Processing the meat is a family affair and I had just locked them into at least two days of work.

I have the 1006 S&W
Colt, Gold cup, Delta elite, stainless
610, S&W (wheel gun)
16",ss, flattop upper for my AR with an EOtech sight.

I've been thinking of a glock 29 for a CCW. Have you fired one of their compact 10's? Is is worse than a compact .45?

Thanks

I'd love to have a 10mm, but I hear noone can make a gun that can stand the caliber. I see Kimber is starting to make a 10mm now. Saw it on their website. How's the recoil of that caliber?

I don't think they made more than a couple of dozen. All I have left is a Delta Elite slide and one metal form mag. :) :) :) . Jim
PS: I shoot with a sheriff deputy who has put many rounds through his Glock with no problems. He normally loads major which is way below full power 10 and has little recoil. I don't see any need for the full power 10 except for hunting. The 10 lite (40S&W) is about all that is needed for games or defense. If you only use the full power 10's occasionly there shouldn't be any problem.

I have a Glock model 20 10mm. I havent shot it as much as i wanted to, but i hope that will change this year. I saw lendell's post, that no one made a gun that would stand up to the caliber.....I may be wrong on this, but Glock specifially made the G20 for it. Every other gun manufacture used the .45 frame and slide for the 10mm, but they were to weak for the pressures of hot loads. Glock made there slide a lot thicker, plus the polymer frame is more "flexible" than the steel or aluminum frames. Plus you can buy an extended, ported barrel for hunting, you can get high cap magazines....I dont think you can do that with the other manufactures.
