Here's my all-original Russian SKS. All-original with the exception of the buttpad, that is.

That gives the safety room to operate, or rather, gives you room to operate the safety.

Why don't you start a topic in the gallery dedicated to yours? Also, two words for ya: Butt Pad. The SKS can be rough on the shoulder and butt pads are cheap.

Say what you want, but I've come back from shooting my sks with a purple shoulder. Now, my old twelve gauge used to turn it nearly black, but that is beside the point.

A recoil pad will make the SKS's short stock fit most Americans better, reducing felt recoil both by acting as a cushion and due to the fact that a rifle that fits you poorly accentuates recoil. Don't forget that a rubber buttplate will also keep the rifle from slipping around on your shoulder as you fire.
Blender, when you shoulder the rifle, do you snuggle the butt down into the pocket formed by the shoulder and your body and bring your head down to meet the stock, or do you rest the toe of the butt in your shoulder allowing a more upright head position on the stock? The latter stance WILL give you serious bruises with a relatively light-kicking rifle. I've also noticed that if you don't get out to shoot much, your shoulder will bruise more easily. I've come back looking like the loser in a shoulder-punching contest after a day's shooting. Just remember, bruises don't matter. If they make you flinch, THAT matters!

When I got it during the summer of 2004, some idiot had slapped some red varnish all over the stock. I feel like, judging by the prices I've recently seen, I stole it at $200. When I got it home, I actually stripped the stock and refinished it. I also just sanded the handguard, taped off the gas tube, and sorayed it with some satin varnish. The bueing was worn off in the usual areas (end of the barrel and where the bolt slides around), so I toched it up with some SuperBlue from Wal-Mart. I gotta say, even after all of my dealings with the AK, I think as far as rifles go, the SKS is REALLY hard to beat as far as looks go.
