I have a 700 (in 308) and I have no complaints whatsoever. Accurate, butter smooth trigger and lots of after market stuff for it. However, if I had to do it over again, I would go with a savage. I wish I could remember the model number <_< But my uncle got a s/s Savage with a 24" bull barrel, w/ scope mount and synthetic stock for 400-450 at wally world. Its trigger makes every other trigger I have ever pulled seem like a rusty old bb gun. And it was dead on out of the box at a 100 yds (3/4 group..1st group fired through it too). Where as my 700 was barely on the target at 100 yds straight out of the box. My only complaint about the Savage is that with the bull barrel it is a bit front heavy, but I am sure once you fire it a few times you'd get to where you dont even notice it. I am seriously considering trading my 700 in for a Savage like my Uncles. I think it is an Accu-Trigger something or other...
---EDIT---
I am almost positive it was wally world, but it might have been a local gun shop...

The 70, probably the best overall for my 2 cents.. Remingtons seem to have as a rule of thumb a nasty trigger out of the box, and the bolts could use a bit more squaring. Dollar to dollar, I would say you will come out ahead by going with the Mod. 70.
I will agree with Localnerd, Savage has come a long ways in the last few years, and would really be worth considering.

To put in my 2 cents, I have a Savage with bull barrel in .308 being fairly sturdy I would still find it difficult to carry in the woods all day. Savage makes a Hunter Series that is light in weight 6 1/2#, and has an owner adjustable trigger 1 1/2# to 4 1/2#.
I have a Remington I use for deer hunting in .308. The barrel is 22". This length is much easier to carry than a longer barrel. I can even hold it like a pistol down at my side and not touch the ground to rest my left arms sometimes. I had to do a trigger job on it as it was very stiff. Accuracy improved a bunch.
If you use an ATV and a tree stand to hunt from then you could carry a heavier rifle. Other wise weight, trigger pull, and scope are more important than the brand of rifle for hunting deer.
One other thing. The Remington is beautiful, with fancy wood grain checkered stock, metal polished, no sign of machining, gold bead front sight. This adds cost to the rifle, not accuracy. On the other side is Savage. It isn't a beautiful rifle, it is rather plain. It came from the factory with the barrel free floated, piller beded, and a trigger job. Savage tends to put their money in accuracy improvement. I don't believe the difference in accuracy will be noticeable in hunting conditions. The rifle that has killed more deer than any other in history is the pre-historic Winchester 30-30 carbine.

My vote would go for the Savage also.

Browning makes some nice firearms, but from what I've heard, you've got to be careful with them... Local gunsmith told me he took his Browning shotgun duck hunting last year. He said he found rust in the barrel after the first day. Now if it were any other guy, I'd say it was because of neglect. But his guy makes makes $10,000+ custom double shotguns! Not one to forget or abuse his guns. For that reason, amid others, I would be hesitant to take a Browning into harsh, wet field conditions.
BTW, Browning seems to like to build their firearms weird just for the sake of being weird! Take their lever action rifles for example...the trigger is one piece with the lever! The first time I shot one, I thought it was broken. The weirdest thing, seeing the trigger swing down with the lever... I say if it aint broke, then don't fix it. Just give me a Winchester!
BTW, you can ignore this post, I'm in a ramblin' mood tonight...

I think any of the 3 would be a good choice. I have a 700 in .270 and it has taken 10 deer in 10 shots since I have had it. Had a Remington in .30-06 before that. I would go for the .308 in any of the 3.

What is the model number of that wally world savege you were talking about? Also, the Remington has a built in bedding block; is there anything similar on the savage?

i have a 20+ year old rem 700 BDL, adj. trigger. there was nothing better off the shelf back then. the new savages are trading places with rem's. the times have changed; personal feedback (not professional) is what i base my opinion on because they spent money not recieved money to shoot it. so far everyone i know of swears by em.

Good point.
The Browning BAR is a semi auto and the Rem. 700 and Model 70 Winchester are both bolt actions. First decide which one you want, a semi auto or bolt action. As for caliber, I'd go with the old standby, 30.06. You have more versatiliy in bullet grain, and it will do the same job as a 308, 270 or 243. Check the bullistics in the Shooters Bible. You will see that with all the various bullet grains the 30.06 offers, you can duplicate just about any other cartriage.
