What, exactly, must I do, as far as conforming to any regulations, to an SKS to install a folding stock now that the Choate folders are readily available?

It depends on what you're putting it on (Yugo, Chinese, Russian, etc). No matter what one you're using it on you HAVE to have 10 or less imported parts. TAPCO had a list in their catalog and I believe on their website showing the parts recognized by the BATF as being primary. This usually (always?) means that you have to change out the magazine for a US made aftermarket mag (giving you another 3 US parts). Considering that NONE of the aftermarket mags are 100% reliable (unlike the originals), I got rid of my folder just to keep the original mag. I'd rather have the famous SKS reliability than something that looks "cool" (not saying this is what you're after either). The other thing I noticed is that the more I folded the stock the sloppier it got. Even worse, when I to put it back into the stock at one point the receiver didn't want to go back as far as it should. No problem, I'll just tap the butt on the ground a couple of times to seat it. Works for the originals when you have a tight receiver/crosspin fit. BAD IDEA! After two light taps I had wobble I couldn't adjust out and I'm thinking "how is this going to hold up in the field????". I ended up selling the folder to a kid that wanted a "gee-wiz" toy.

Things to consider..... You can go over to SKS Boards and see what others have done but please be warned that they do seem to have a LOT of kids running around acting like kids (my favorite: "I'm cutting my SKS barrel down to 1" beyond the gas block. It oughta look cool with a folder!!! I'm glad the AWB is outta here!!!" Yeah kid, and you will be too if you do that. Good luck at Club Fed!)
