are any variations of the mp5 available to the public? if so, where can i buy one inexpensively?

Well, the mp5 is based off the HK 93, if I'm not mistaken, but all of these are rifles. The HK93/G3 is basically an mp5, only longer and shoots .308 caliber.

The top rifle is a G3k and the bottom rifle is a HK91/G3. The mp5 is based off of the G3K.

There are a few companies such as SW (not to be confused with S&W-Smith&Wesson) and Vulcan Arms that make MP5 clones, but your're still looking at around $1200-1500 for them. Look them up in Shotgun News, or on-line.

Here is an MP5; note the similarity between it and the G3K.

its always a hassle trying to find a certain item in shotgun news. is there a website i can go to instead? are they legal?

Yeah, they're legal. Just go to a good gun store or to a gun show, and there should be plenty floating around.

I assume your "cal" means California. If so, the short answer is no. The long answer is if you can find an SP89 pistol for sale private party you could buy one but it HAS to be private party. Also, technically you'd never be able to shoot it because I'm not aware of any 10 round magazines for MP5s and their clones.

And make sure you don't put the 'forward' handle grip under the barrel of the SP89,cause then you have a Class 2 SBR.

Do mp5's cause the same case striations as G3's? Just wondering if theyre that similar.

dargeeling,

the "fluted chamber" (striations) is usually only found in chambers for "necked" cases. 9mm is not necked, it is a staight walled case.

MP 5's (9mm) DO have fluted chambers and will leave marks on the shell casings.

Case striations remind me of mexico around the yucatan. All the soldiers have g3's, and there is a suprising amount of g3 brass just laying around--I guess the soldiers are too lazy to pick up their used brass, and make it look like their not still trying there darndest to subjugate the mayas. You can always tell a south american battlefield by the g3 brass.

H&K rifles are high quality weapons with many options. Just look around and you will be able to find some really cool setups, new and used. Bobcat Weapons are making clones of the MP5 series, not sure of the quality myself but they are being readily sold on gunbroker.com. I decided to go with the middle sibbling of the H&K family. The .223 version, the HK93. Heres some pics...
