View Full Version : Thinking of a .357 sig

I want a pistol with good stopping power, but something with smaller rounds than the .45(I already own a 1911, anyway). All of my research keeps leading me back to the .357 sig. Any thoughts? And, I really do like the Springfield XD line.

You already have a 1911 45 so the only thing that I can think that is truly more effective would be a 10mm. I only have one 357Sig and that is in my token Glock. The percieved recoil and muzzle jump is much more pronounced (slappy vs push) than in any of my 45s.

Well, recoil is fine; i just want the shot capacity and something strong.

I have a Glock 32 (357sig) on my CCW, it also shows the 40S&W (357S/40S&W 2 for the price of 1, we are only allowed 3 guns on permits in CA).
The 357Sig is much sharper in recoil and has more muzzle blast than the 40S&W. I think where you hit someone is more important rather than it being a357Sig/45/40/etc. but then..... I got mine when I only had 9s on my permit. One night I was in a restrauant and noticed 4-5 extermely large young men come in the door. They were ok, no problems, but the thought crossed my mine that one just might be in the situation where the penetration, etc of the 9mm wasn't a comfort to my frame of mind. I bought the gun in 357Sig and added the 40S&W bbl. Both of these rounds seem rather similar using light bullets: 115 in 357, 135 in 40. The heavy 40 bullets 180's etc that can be used in the 40 highlights the differences. A sky marshall that shot with us loved his 357Sig, I think that was standard issue for them, but not really sure. The fourty is either a lot better than the 45 or nowhere as good depending on who you talk to,

You can get .357sig in up to 150 grain. They are made by FEDERAL and it is in the hyra-shok. Even with the 115grain rounds penetration should NOT be a problem. Come on here your shooting basically a 9mm caliber bullet with a .40 cal cartridge. 9MM .355 caliber .357sig 357caliber. My .02 worth.

I'm still thinking of one... trying to tarde into one now. See my WTT in the firearms section.

I have recently switched to a glock 32 ( .357 SIG) for CCW this year. This decision came about when several law enforcement agencies adopted them.

Ammo is a little bit expensive but the power of this round gives one renewed
confidence compared to my old .45 ACP. The Glock 32 holds 13+1 , resulting in 50% more firepower and is lighter than my compact 1911. Recoil between my colt commander and the glock 32 are similar. It does not rust like steel guns. Perfect for a low maintenance CCW- sweat lubricated machinery.

Ammo selection is limited in variety, but the 125 grain load approximate the .357 magnum. Check out the loads from Doubletap ammo. They have some awesome loads. Some approach rifle velocities. It is also very reliable as feeding a 9mm bullet into a 40 caliber chamber is not rocket science.

Besides, a quick swap of the barrel also allows me to shoot 40SW. barrels from Lone wolf are around 100 bucks.

For Holsters, I like the Comp-tac Slide IWB. this allows me to carry the Glock 32,26, 23,19 even the 34/35. I have installed trijicon NS on my glock and a new York trigger. It is a carry gun that I intend to use in real life threatening situations. I dont like 3.5 lb. connectors in defense guns.

I buddy of mine who is a SEAL team operator likes the Springer XD, but lost interest in it after he found out that the XD is actually a Croatian Gun and was used to be known as the HS2000. He also said that it rubs his fingers raw after about 300 rounds ( in 9mm).

357 SIG a good CCW caliber. It barks and bites like a pit bull in a little poodle shooter package.

Right now I have a G 22, 27 (my CCW), and a 19. I use an MTAC holster for ccw, and it is the slide model, so it fits all of mine. Both my 19 and 27 have Night Sights

Still, I'd like a .357.

I would personally be worried about overpenetration. I know there are folks who will disagree with me on this one, but I have shot this round extensively in my three glocks and reload for both .40 and .357 sig. I got the conversion (factory) .357 barrels for bears as I was afraid .40 just wouldn't penetrate deep enough to get the point across. We have some pretty agressive black bears around here.

I load a 124 grain hp, and I wouldn't be surprised if it would go right through a white tail or a bad guy. Even with a pretty good expansion bullet, it will tear right out the back of 8" trees. Just shot one down today trading off with my wife (she shoots 9mm, though). Basically this round is ballistically so similar to .357 magnum that all the testing and experience pertains.

For home defence, I would choose .40, but if penetration is a good thing, .357 is pretty good for that. Extremely powerful round if you can make it stop in your target. Quite a satisfyingly robust muzzle blast. Makes people stop and look when shooting my Glock 27.

By the way, you can get the factory barrels for both your G22 and G27 and try it out for 125 per barrel. g27 takes a g33 barrel and the g22 takes a g31 barrel. Drop in NO MODS. Even the mags work. The xd has a nice feeling grip and button rifled for lead bullets. I don't much care for the long take up in the trigger, but it's better than a glock trigger.

PS .357 sig is NOT just a 9mm plunked on a necked .40 case. At max (never exceed) loads of 9.2 grains of no 5 behind a 124 grain bullet, you are pushing almost 40,000 psi. .40 would be more like 7 grains at 35000 psi. .357 sig is toasty. Muzzle energy for .40 is in the realms of 525 joules out of a 4.5" barrel. .357 sig it more like 765! That's over 45% more powerful. BOOM!
