I have wanted a Marlin Cowboy 45/70 26" Tapered Octagonal Barrel for a long time. Does anyone here have one? If so what do ya think about it? I would use it for deer hunting. What would be my hold over at 150 or so? Most deer I take are about that range. Now I use an 30-06, but have always wanted to carry a 45/70. With my older eyes I have to use scopes now. Thanx, CM

camera man,
What would be my hold over at 150 or so? this would depend on where you have zeroed.

if you used 50 yds for zero, i would say 12 to 18 inches hold over on 150 yds. this would also depend on the load you used. :cannon:

45/70 is my favorite rifle caliber. i have reloaded it almost 35 yrs.

HI -- I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy as well as a Marlin 1895 "regular". I prefer the Cowboy model for most hunting. It is very well balanced for me and handles a scope quite well, I use a fixed 4 power. I like the regular 1895 for close quarters or brush but it doesn't match up with the Cowboy for total balance in your hands. I stuff them both full of Cor Bon's 460 hardcast or the round nose 350 for maximum punch, however, I have found the 300 grain and 405 grain slow factory rounds perfect for deer at close range. When long range shots are facing me, the Cowboy 1895 and Cor Bon's premium shells make it a sure deal! If you can't decide which to get, buy both like I did and sleep well at night!

If I had the $ I would have both. But for now, I have to work on just one. And I think it will be the CB, Thanx.

I just got the 1895 in 45/70 with the 22" barrel and took it out to the range yesterday - I love it!

I shot factory loaded Remington 300 gr sjhp and 405 gr sp at the range and was impressed with the accuracy and the fun this gun makes. You can find the details of the ammunition at www.remington.com.

The 300 gr drops 4.6 inch at 100 yards, 13.8 at 200 and 28.6 inch at 300 yards. It has a muzzle exit speed of 1810 ft/sec.
The 405 gr drops 8.5 inch at 100 yards, 24 at 200 and 47.4 inch at 300 yards. It has a muzzle exit speed of 1330 ft/sec.

The 300 gr is supposed to be a good dear load but I have not tried that myself yet.

Cheers,
Tom

I just got the 22 inch 1895 too and am considering factory loads for deer hunting. Has anyone used the Winchester Partition Gold? Is the expansion too "controlled" for deer?

The reason I went with a big bore is that I'm tired of the projectiles zipping right through the deer and making me track them 200 yards through a swamp when I execute a perfect kill shot.

Not now! :cannon:

the original remington 405 gr lead ball is ideal for deer. 100 yrds is about the max range though, recoil is like 30/30 w/150 gr. however it is almost like sending three 150 gr. 30/30 rnds down range at once.

I looked up the ballistics for the 405 gr on Remington.com and, I have to admit, I'm a little scared off by the drop between 75 and 100 yards (it reads -5.9in for 75yds and -10.76in for 100yds).

I'm sure the distance the gun is sighted in matters, but another reason I got a lever action is for quick shots while deer are moving quickly through brush. If I use a 405gr Remington factory, won't I have to adjust every shot substantially for yardage?

Thanks for the help.

limit the weapons moving shots to 50+- yards. there is an article in NRA's oct '04 "american rifleman" about the guide gun. the author's alaskan guide said, "i think that little gun is too big for caribou." he was dropping caribou @ 125 yds. check out the article, it is a testimonial to the marlin 45/70.

i hope to have one soon, i have two 45/70's and can not justify a 3rd.

I just got me some 430gr hard cast loads that run at close to 2000fps. They kick a little bit more but do not drop as significant as the factory loads (and should be good up to 300 yards for deer I was told.).

Attached a pic of "my beauty" - I just got a scope mounted and will zero it in today or tomorrow. Maybe get my first deer in KY next week...
