Hi All!

I shot a Browning Hi power practical at the range the other day and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a range rental and had been through the ringer but was very accurate and a joy to shoot. I bought one shortly thereafter. I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the new gun. I stripped it down and cleaned it well, then reassembled it and checked the tightness and lock up etc... All was very tight and seemed fine. I then paid close attention to the trigger. Holy Cow! The trigger was awful! I put a Lyman digital scale on it and the pull was a consistent 9lbs 3 oz.!!! No wonder I could only get about 5" groups at 15 yards! I guess I was lucky to even be on the paper.

The gun is now a the local gunsmith's and will be done in a week or so. I'll post an update when I get it back. I was amazed that Browning would allow a trigger like that out of the factory. The only other experience I've had is on a Browning auto 5 shotgun and a Buckmark pistol, both of which have fine triggers.

Good luck with the trigger job; I understand that's pretty tricky with HPs.

My Belgian HP was the first handgun I bought (in 1973 for $157). Initially, I too had trouble keeping my shots on paper at 25 yrds. Because the trigger is so heavy, most novice shooters tend to pull off target to get the thing to fire ("too much trigger"). If you're a right handed shooter, your shots are probably going to the left. I'm a lefty, so mine were going to the right.

I considered getting a trigger job but opted to leave it alone and not have anyone monkey with it. After many yrs of shooting the thing, I can get groups of 5 inches or less at 25 yds. Not earthshaking but very respectable for a combat pistol. I could do better if my eyes (or the sights) were better. Trigger is still heavy, but there's absolutely no creep and the gun's totally reliable with std ball ammo.

If I had to go to war, this is the handgun I'd take.

I got it back from the smith. He got the trigger down to around 5# and removed the magazine disconnect. He said to try it and see if he needs to go further. I just ran about 250 rounds through it and it's much better. It's grouping around 2.5"-3" now. Still not as good as my Kimber Gold Combat  but the Browning didn't cost $1500 either. It actually feels like it got better as the session went on. I'll have to get a scale and check to see what it is now. Next up is some new sights. I ordered the adjustable LPA black target rear and the MMC green tritium dot front from Brownells. The sights that came on it were a fixed set of Millets. Ick. The front sight is a big white ramp and the rear is a white outline. It all blends together to form a big white blob. Very nasty and very inaccurate.

You are correct as far as the pull to the left. Clearly you've had the same experience.

The Browning is back at the smith this week to get a bit more off the trigger. It just feels a bit too stiff even at 5#. I measured the one on my Kimber and it's right there at 5# as well but the 1911 is a straight pull back while the Hi-Power is a lever pivot type pull. That must be the difference. The Kimber feels much lighter but it's a different pull. While I was at it, I left the Kimber with him to get lightened up as well. I don't need a hair trigger but a nice crisp 4# would be acceptable. Funny...the Kimber websight claims that the Gold Combat has a pull of 3.5# - 4# from the factory. yeah right. They must have forgotten to do mine. They also forgot to mark "Custom Shop" on the slide. Still, it's a nice gun.
