View Full Version : akmags for sks
just got my yugo m59 I wanted to know if it could be modified to use ak mags??
later cooter
Yes the SKS can be converted to use AK mags. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that your rifle would become very illegal if you did that conversion, even if you did remove the bayo mount, or grenade launcher.(or just waited for the AWB to sunset) In addition to the assault weapon ban, you have the imported parts count to worry about. You might want to get in touch with someone that can interpret these ridiculous laws better than I, before you even think of attempting a conversion.
I think Paladin Press used to publish a book that showed you how the conversion was done. I'm not really sure if its worth your time though. The SKS seems to function best with the original 10 round fixed clip.
It's very likely the modification you suggest is illegal. However, most hi-cap mods for SKS's don't work very well, so if you want more than 10 rounds capacity in the 7.62x39, I'd suggest you get an AK or SKS that was factory-designed to use AK mags. Regarding the books with instructions to modify various weapons, if the mods don't work or you're arrested for illegal modifications, the publisher and author aren't very likely to help you out (these books generally include a disclaimer that they're for informational use only and legality or functionality are the responsibility of the reader).
well looks like im geting an ak <_< I dont like just ten rounds :D :ar15:. know where I can get a cheap ak . and how much would it cost??
Best cheap AK in current production would be the Romanian WASR-10. Make sure it will accept the standard double stacked 30 round clips before you buy. Try not to pay much more than $300 for it. Check all the local gunshows and gunshops in your area. They always seem to have a few on hand.

AIM or Joken had SKS D's or M's that from the factory take AK mags. They run like 500$$ That is I'm thinking the only way to use AK mags in anSKS. I could be wrong, it's happened before ;)
Go to a pwn shop or gunshow and get a MAK 90, convert it with 5 US parts. MAK 90's go for around $300. Maybe after the bann ends they will be even cheaper. IMHO the Norinco's are better quality than the Romanians. I have a WASR and like it. But I had it GunCoated, front sight cant fixed, and a Red Star trigger group put in. My Norinco's had nothing done but parts count fullfilled. Stock set and mag follower plus floor plate for mag will give you the proper US parts count ;)
I have an SKS D model, takes AK mags. I only paid $295 for it. That's here in Alabama. Prices may vary in other areas.
Anyway, mine also has the 16" barrel. I dropped it into a Dragunov type stock($50) and bought 4 extra mags and a pouch for $29. Shoots 4" groups@100 with Wolf Hollowpoints. Oh, yeah, I also added a weaver base recoil spring cover and a BSA Red dot.
My sks came with a fixed 20 round box magazine. It looks similar to the 10 round box, but holds 20.

I have a Yugo that my gunsmith modified the 10 round box magazine so it's removable. I also have a 20 and a 30 round sks mags for it. They are problematic and I had to have him modify them to get them to work. They also matte chromed them to match the gun
Timberland,
Are they the SKS mags with the big goofy tab sticking out the front?
Mine uses real AK mags and functions excellent.

Yes, they are sks magazines with the tab sticking out. I have found some fit good and others don't. Some won't lock in place. Some mags when the bolt comes home on an empty mag and stops on the follower, the follower will do a nose dive in the mag.
