For me personally I will be insearch of my biggest Whitetail Buck ever taken with a Handgun by yours truly. I have been at this Handgun Hunting game with Speciality Handguns for 22 years, have taken quite a number of Whitetails, and even some decent Bucks. However this year my goal is to harvest my largest Handgunned Whitetail Buck to date.
As per the Handgun, it is a Super 14 Contender chambered for the .30-30 Ackley Improved Cartridge. This barrel started out life as an old style 6 Land & Groove 1 in 14" Twist .30 Herrett Barrrel that I had rechambered to the .30-30 Ackley Improved Cartridge by SSK Industries. I also had this barrel Hard Chrome Plated by Metaloy Industries with their Stain Finish to better match the Stainless-Steel Contender Frame. The Weaver Scope Base has been modified in that two extra holes were drilled in the base (with cooresponding holes drilled and tapped in the Barrel) so it is now attached with 6 screws instead of 4. In addition I also removed the front portion of the Weaver Base that hangs out over the barrel, but dies not contact anything or in my opinion have any real purpose. The 2x7x32mm Burris LER Handgun Scope is mounted in 3 Millett Vertical Split Scope Rings.

The load I will be using is the same load that I used last year to harvest two Whitetails (actually I harvested one at 286 yards and my youngest daughter harvested one at 126 yards with this Handgun / Load combo). The load consists of a 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip pushed to an average muzzle velocity of 2683 FPS by IMR-4198. 5 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench (shooting off of a Bypod with a Sandbag under the grip) result in an average of slightly under 3/4".
Improving the shape of the .30-30 Winchester to the blown out .30-30 Ackley Improved results in a 30% increase in case capacity, and an average of almost 300 FPS increase in velocity. I have tried a few different Rifle Type Cartridges in Handguns over the past 22 years, and most have done exactly what I needed them to do. However the .30-30 AI is a pure joy to work with, and provides quite good performance.
