View Full Version : Israeli Army 10/22
FYI. Just thought I'd post this.
The IDF has been using 10/22's for riot control as a less than lethal weapon. If someone is stirring up a crowd, they'll shoot him in the legs to keep him from doing so. Ouch! The rifles are fully surpressed!

Yeah those are pretty cool. I want to build a similar gun, using a Thompson .22 Classic Benchmark as a base with the muzzle threaded to accomadate a suppressor, a 4X night vision scope and appropriate synthetic tactical furniture. I call the rifle a SPTR (pronounced "speeter") or Special purpose Precision Tactical Rifle. Another term I feel appropriate for the weapon is that of "Hush Puppy", for its capabilities in silencing sentry canines used to guard OpFor installations.
that's an awesome pic....those are some serious dudes!I once had an opportunity to fire a full auto suppressed 10/22....we were mowing down crows off of a fence rail.sounded like a typewriter, about all you heard was the 'snicking' of the bolt.
I have read that those are no longer in use due to them being "too lethal."

In 1987, the Intifada - the Palestinian uprising against the Israeli regime in the Territories - broke out, and involved mass violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians protestors. As a result, the Israeli security forces needed a weapon with a more potent firepower then the standard riot control metal covered rubber round, but at the same time less lethal then the standard issue 5.56 mm round of the M16/Galil assault rifles. So the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) searched for a 0.22 caliber accurate rifle that will be used to take out the key protest leaders by shooting them in the legs.
The Ruger 10/22, fitted with a X4 day optic, a full length suppressor and a Harris bipod was selected for this role and was due to be issued to all infantry oriented units, including both special and conventional forces. However, as often happens in the shoestring budget IDF, financial problems prevented the weapon's mass distribution, and it was mainly issued to Special Forces (SF) units. Moreover, instead of using the rifle as a riot control weapon, as originally intended, the Israeli SF deployed the Ruger 10/22 more as a "Hush Puppy" weapon used to silently and effectively eliminate disturbing dogs prior to operations.
In the recent Israeli-Palestinian clashes began in 2000, the Ruger resumes it's original role as a less lethal riot control weapon. However, it's usage in this role was rather controversial this time. After several incidents involving the death of Palestinians by the Ruger fire, the IDF conducted a field experiment in the Ruger at the IDF Sniper School in Mitkan Adam under the supervision of the IDF Judge Advocate General (JAG). The test showed that the Ruger was more lethal then thought especially in upper body injuries. Also, since it's suppressed and was considered less lethal by the troops, the soldiers were much more likely to use the Ruger loosely then intended.
As a result of this test, the JAG reclassified the Ruger as a lethal weapon. As a lethal weapon, the usage of the Ruger in riot control is much more limited today. In the IDF Center Command it was completely prohibited to use and the IDF South Command it's deployment was cut down dramatically.

I once herd that they (IDF) targeted the crotch area  of rioters. Tell me that don't send a message to all the rock throwers!

The .22 is less than lethal? I know this has already been stated, but the the .22 is very lethal - especially if it hits bone. The .22 bullet is so small and light, when it hits heavy muscle or bone, it fractures into a bunch of artery splittin' lead. I'm surprised to hear Israel ever used them for riot control! :o
Well the reason they stopped using it was they actually killed a few people. I guess part of the problem with a .22LR is that the wound is decieving, it doesn't look to bad.

Shoot them with a .22 today, they shoot you with an RPG tomorrow. If they are rioting, they don't care who is around or who they hurt. A couple get hit, then the rest will get the point maybe. I know it seems like a barbaric way to look at it, but that is just how I feel.

That won't do a darn thing - these people WANT martyrdom. It's the hightest - and only - thing they esteem to become. You'd just as soon send the Publisher's Clearinghouse prize patrol to their homes and tell 'em they won $10 million. You should watch the HBO documentary Death in Gaza. Very eye-opening and shows the abysmal brutality and pig headidness on both sides that is so ingrown and religious based that it's virtually impossible to change at this point. Neither side wants to listen and just wants to kill. They'll either have to mutually change their attitudes or one clan is going to have to be slaughtered off.

Greeks vs Turks
Jews vs Arabs

So what can we do to defeat these sub-humans who decapitate their prisoners? Humiliate them? Can you imagine what the media outrage would be like? :trooper:

does any one know if you can turn a 10/22 long rifle into a magnum
I don't think so...I'm 95% on that. When people convert to the new .17cal they convert .22mags. The action would have to be a little longer to handle the case. The rotary mag will be larger also.

Bo, 10 years ago there was a smith that for the samll sum of 1100$$$$ would do such a conversion. Now they are few and far between cause of the intro of the 10/22 magnum. So save the 600 and buy one of those ;)

Yes it can be done, the trigger housing has to be reworked to make room for the mag mag. Replace barrel, Cocking handle, guiderod & recoil spring assy. I talked with a guy at the range that did it years ago, but the 10/22 LR has an aluminium receiver while the 10/22 mag has a steel receiver. His alum receiver cracked. :(
 Oops, guess you can do anything if you are willing to pay the $
