I have the Marlin 1895 with the pistol grip stock. I paid less than 500 out the door even with the California taxes fees DROS ect....Gibbsells one for 300 and change and New England Firearms sells a singleshot for less than 200. There are never used ones around, people just dont let them go around here. I know I would never sell mine. Good luck. If you reload you will never regret buying one.

 how bad is the recoil on the 45-70??

 That depends on weight of the bullet mostly, heavy bullets GENERALLY have a little more felt recoil.Let's put it another way-when you squeeze the trigger you will definately know it's not a .223,but it's not a .460 weatherby either! :D :sniper:

I have 3. I recommend the Marlin. It works very well and is the least expensive.

My favorite load is an Oregon Trail 405 grain lead bullet over 28.0 grains (that's twenty eight point zero) of XMP 5744. That gives me a chronographed velocity of right at 1300fps (IIRC) and excellent 200 yard accuracy. It is superb in my Shiloh Sharps out to 650 yards - but you ain't gonna get that with your Marlin. My Shiloh has an MVA long range tang sight with a Hadley cup and the front sight is a spirit level / globe type -it's set up for that kind of shooting.

It is a thumper but not any more so than the 308.

BTW: for your own safety, please do NOT trust ANYone's load information (including mine) without verifying it in a loading book FIRST.

I too concur with the 1895 marlin recommendation. I've had my 1895 Marlin since the early to mid 70s and my son bought a 1895 Cowboy model for a little more than $425 at a gun show. I handload it with light to moderate doses of H4227 with 405 grain lead bullets for plinking fun. Actually, I adjusted my poweder charge until I got about 1200 fps. I have also loaded for elk using 440 grain Cast Performance lead bullets using stiff (for me) dosages of Reloader 7. The recoil from that load is stiff, but the charge is under the max recommended and the cases fall from the chamer. For deer I use a moderate charge of IMR4198 that gives me an average of 1866 fps with the Hornady 300 grain hp bullet.

You don't need to load up the 45-70 to maximum charges to get get the job done. If you don't handload, shooting the 45-70 can get a bit expensive. That's a good reason to learn how to reload.

I have to recommend the 1895 marlin to.I have had mine for about 2 years and I am very happy with it. And if you reload that makes it even better.I saw that someone asked about recoil. It has recoil to it but its not as bad as some might think. My 11 year old son loves shooting mine, and my 64 year old dad liked it so much he went out and bought his own.But if you reload you can custumize your loads to meet your needs.and the fun begines..
