You can't go wrong with a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911-A1. I picked one up in the last six months and can't find a thing wrong with it. It shoots everything I feed it without fail, and shoots where I point it. They have had good reviews and if you check back through this forum you will find a lot of support for it. I found mine on Guns American for $380. Most prices run about $420 but look around and you might find a deal. Good luck.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it ! :D

Another viewpoint would be to spend a little more and get a bit nicer pistol the first time around. I recently bought my first 1911 and I agonized over the decision for months before I finally "pulled the trigger". I ended up spending more than i had planned but I'm not sorry I did. My logic was to spend a bit more the first time around instead of spending $450 at first and then wishing I had spent the $800 on a Kimber and doing that later. if that were the case, you end up spending $1250 instead of $800. Of course, you might get trade in value and knock that down a bit but why not do it right the first time? I bought a high end Kimber and it shoots much better than I do. Even the basic Kimber models shoot very well.
Then again, thats just my .02

Skipping over quite a few good guns! Auto Ordnance for $420, Rock Island Armory for $300 are just two of the lower end 1911's that are excellent for the money; and pretty darn good all the way around.
I vote for the WW2 Springfield, $400 and it functions better than most 1911's available 10 years ago. And it accepts all the goodies and add ons plus this will teach you more than buying one all built up. Those should be bought later after you have owned a 1911 and have an idea on what you really want in a .45 :2guns:

My 1st .45 is a MKIX series 70.
i got it and a mauser rifle for an old truck i had. dont know much about it short of how to clean it and shoot. i do want to get another. not that its worn out or anything but this one is kind of "fancy" it had the nice grips and some lotsa clickies and screws on the rear sight. i just want a basic one with a no snag rear and front site.
so im looking into building or buying a lower end but well made pistol too.

I'd give another vote for the Springer Mil-Spec--its got everything you need and nothing more. Its got a good barrel, a flared and lowered ejection port, a beveled feed ramp, all kinds of finish options, and good hi-vis fixed sights. Oh, and the price is right too. The only way I could see myself shooting it better is with a better trigger. Its pretty darn accurate.

norinco is also a nice gun. Or you can find a basterized 1911. Mixed parts refinsished GI's can be found in the 300 to 800 price range

cooter, Ask yourself what you want this 1911 to be....Your carry, Your project build, just a range plinker or just a safe queen. For carry on budget you can't go wrong with springfield (except for sights loosening for some of us, easily taken care of "lock tite" blue)- Fit/finish decent, forged frame/slide and great customer service. note:sights I was reffering to are the novak rear and staked front... good luck and continue your research:)
