View Full Version : looking to buy a FAL
I've been looking into getting an FN-Fal. The gun dealer told me he didn't know where to get one. Also does anyone know anything about Atlantic Firearms.
did a search, found the website.....wow!can't believe i missed this before now...have you been to it yet?
looks like those cheaper FAL's are centurys...gotta love that imbel carbine!
they have a nice selection,I too am wondering how they are to do business with
Here is every thing that can be learned about FAL's:

I'm assuming you know to run screaming like a sissy little girl from anything related to Century.

I am acutally impressed by Century parts, how can a company that makes ONLY moderate to poor quality parts can be sold so many places?..

Go to Federal Arms Corp. Get an Imbel Type 3 forged receiver for $199. Go to DSA for the must have American parts and a match barrel. DSAs receivers are better quality than the Imbel, but not by enough to justify the price. But hey, dollars? Smoke 'em if you got 'em. Stainless gas piston and maybe furniture from Tapco. Don't let the plastic furniture scare you. It's light and you can get reflective insulation from any hardware store. It'll cause a bit more heat mirage in the sights, but it'll keep your mitts cool.
Concentrate on a quality barrel and receiver. Everything else is easily swapped out after the build if you don't like the end result. 20"+ DSA match barrels should yield sub MOA. My 18" Israeli does that. Anything under that, throws the grouping out to 2+". I think the twists of the longer barrels don't stabilize the bullet enough when the barrel is shortened below 18". Custom DSA barrels should rectify this issue. They make a short gas system kit that kicks ***.
All said, you should be able to build exactly what you need for way under a grand. Good parts for the FALS are relatively plentiful (as opposed to M14s & H&Ks). You already know that you'll save the cost of the build in FAL magazines. Supervising or personally building your own will generally negate getting a sub quality weapon, unless your measuring and machining is like my cooking..

You get what you pay for. The Century products are half the price of the others and are also half the quality of the others.
I restate what geerhed has said: Run screaming like a sissy little girl from anything related to Century

C'mon, guys, don't be so hard on CAI: my very first FAL was a Century Angry Beaver Special. Used, no less. It taught me many things about making a FAL run, sort of a FALsmithing class all in itself. Runs like a champ now. That's the true purpose of a Century Arms rifle: they teach valuable gunsmithing skills, which one then puts to use building *another* rifle that is what you really wanted in the first place.
