I got some 17 HMR ammo the other day in Hornady, Remington, Federal, and CCI.

I shot 4 groupd each from benchrest at 50 yds this morning, since it was dead calm and a good day for it. The groups averaged .531 for the Federal--.400 for the CCi, .531 for the Remington, and .468 for the Hornady.

This is from a Volquartsen muzzel weighted BBL for a Ruger 77/22Mg. rifle.

Anyway, I noticed that on the CCI box the words "bout cruex" were printed. Does anyone know what this means? I don't think it is English.

thats on my CCI box also, below Hollow Point. Is that French or Spanish? All the 17 HMR I've tried groups real close out'a my T.C 23" rifle. I have'nt really benched them all in the Savage, but the T.C is more accurate than the Savage.

I dropped an email on CCI and they came back and said that it is french for "hollow point."

I did some further tests from the 100 yd bench and this time it came out a little different: Horn=1.19 ave, federal=1.065, CCI =1.235 and rem=1.112. These were the average of 4 5 shot groups.

And that little 17 cal barrel gets hot after 40 rounds. :o

For what it is, I don't see a hell of a lot of difference in accuracy. The good news is that they all hit the target in about the same place.

I see that there is a 20 gr. load available. I am gonna give it a try. The velocity is supposed to be 22 something fps.

Here's a good link to the 17HMR stats.

Just goes to show that different rifles like different ammo. My CZ452 likes the Remington 17grain the best. Then comes Hornady, Federal and CCI, in that order.

FYI:
All HMR Ammo is made by the same company "Hornady" in the same
plant on the same equipment to the same specs. only the name and bullet
has been change.

Hylander-- I doubt that hornady is loading all the 17 hmr ammo. Why would they load for CCI with a Speer TNT bullet. Why would manufacturers like CCI and Federal pay hornady to load for them when they manufacture their own ammo? Why would hornady load for them? If they were the only ones loading it they would sell it in their name to make the money. Even the case is stamped with a C or H for the manufacture.

I don't know why they are loading for the other company's.
Probably they are just not set up for producing the 17HMR rd. yet.
This is information I got from an artical in Predator Magazine.
To which I believe to be true.
I went last week to a local walmart to compaire said ammo.
Three differant brands with three differant bullets.
All the cases in all three brands had a dimple in the case in exactly
the same spot.
Coincidence, I don't think so.
They had to of came off the same equipment in the same Lot.
Then I went to two local gun stores to compair said ammo.
None of the cases had dimples.

Just got off of the phone with Hornady. They're making the bullets, CCI is doing all of the manufacturing. CCI is assembling the Remington, Hornady and of course CCI. Remington and Hornady are shipping their brass to CCI. The powder is CCI.

P.S.

ATK Federal is closed until the 4th. I'll call them and find out from them in the morning.

Atta boy, Sniper ! Thanks for cutting through the "I heard", "I read", "I think" and going right to the source.

I'm watching all the discussion on HMR and HM2 closely. I'm intrigued by the .17 caliber but don't know which way to go yet. Thanks for your help with good info.

I have a CZ452 American in 17HMR. EXCELLENT weapon. About $300. Put a BSA Sweet .17 6x18x40AO scope on it. I love it. There's a thread in the Bolt Action Gallery section with a picture of the rifle. It's not too good of a picture. I've got some others but they're still in the camera.

As far as the ammo goes, I've been hearing all sorts of things about the manufacturing part of it. Thought I'd just call the companies and see what they have to say.

Went to a rock quarry today and did some shootin'. Well okay, A LOT. Went through 200 rounds. I've set the CZ for the V-MAX bullet. The hollow points seem to hit to the right about half an inch, when compared to V-MAX. With the V-MAX, I'm holding .5" groups. The hollows are about .75".

The difference has to be the hollow point. The wind was about 3-5 mph, straight across.

I have had good success with the federal in my town its $8 a box instead of $10, its the CCI TNT stuff i stay away from, It just does not leave a big hole like ballistic tips do.
