I've had a Ruger P89 for about a year now. Great gun, never jams easy to take down and clean. It takes 9mm Luger only (thats what the directions say anyway) whats the difference from regular 9mm? I don't see much 9mm Luger in the catalogs and can only get it at my local dealer. Would regular 9mm work in a P89 or is that too dangerous.

9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19mm...they're all the same round. Most likely, the 9mm ammo you've seen for sale is the same stuff. Stay away from 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Browning Long, 9mm Makarov, 9x17, 9x18, 9x21, 9mm Glisenti, 9mm Mauser, 9mm Steyr, 9mm Winchester Magnum, 9mm Ultra, 9mm Bayard Long, or 9mm Federal (not the manufacturer, Federal Cartridge Company makes the round you need, but "9mm Federal" caliber is a rimmed version of the rimless 9mm Luger).

yes special poop this is the same caliber, 9mm luger is because of the cartridge designer GEORG LUGER and the cartridge was designed 1900 or and first introduced in the german navy in the PO8 handgun WW1 and WW2, it can be found as 9×19mm, 9mm para (si vis pacem para bellum) if you want peace prepare for war, then like 9mm NATO, you must be careful because there is a lot of other 9 mm calibers, this 9 luger round is for sure the most used round in the world,( in small arms)
just remember 9mm para or 9mm Luger and you will get what you want.

hope you will enjoy your 9mm para

Sorry it took so long to get back to ya but I've had the chance to put about 300 rounds through the little guy and have not had a single jam, dry fire or failure to feed. It it fell in the sand once ( I shoot in the desert) so for research purposes I fired off the rest of the clip. See above. The design is so simple. I can see how it fires so reliably. The Mini 30 with a hi cap mag however re-defines the word "Jammo-matic." hehe hope this helps.

I have about 900 rounds thru my P89 and the only jams I ever had were a couple of stovepipes due solelly to my limpwristing while shooting single-handed. The pistol has never otherwise jammed or failed to feed or eject since I bought it.

The P-series are great pistols and are so strong that Ruger states in their owner's manuals:

"The Ruger P-series pistols are compatible with all factory ammunition loaded to US Industry Standards, including high-velocity and hollow-point loads, loaded in brass, aluminum, or steel cartridge cases. No 9mm x 19, .45ACP, or .40 S&W ammunition manufactured in accordance with NATO, US, SAAMI, or CIP standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols."

I have a old P85 model, had it a long, long time and it has never jammed. I couldn't even guess at how many rounds have been thru it. I have shot steel case, aluminum case and brass case with no problems. It will eat anything you stuff in it. :2guns:

I have a Ruger P-89C (has a 30 Luger swap barrel), and it is among my most reliable autopistols--every bit as reliable as the SIG-Sauers, Beretta, S&Ws, Walther, and CZs it shares room in the gun safe with. It's a damn sight more reliable than the Mauser Broomhandle and Tokarev TT-30/33 too. This reliability extends to both calibers, and includes cast bullets in that mix.
