Hey fellow memebers, I am considering starting to shop for a marlin 1895 in .45/70 with the 18.5" barrel. Do any of you have experience with this rifle? It will be my first lever gun, since I have always been a bolt and semi-auto man. I'm kind of just looking for a rifle that will be small and easy to pack around, but still pack hella punch. Also, I would like a new one, but might consider a good used one. I live in Missouri, and there are quite a few gun shows that I go to, but I was wondering what a good price would be on a used one. Anyway, I would appreciate any information you have to share. Thanks, and good shooting.

The Marlin 1895 will get it done in Spades.
You might consider the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun. That's the most "packable" rifle Marlin makes in a 47-70. They even produce one in "Stainless Steel" (not entirely true because some of the internal parts are plated).

That's what I'm looking in to. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

I love my Marlin 1895 Cowboy rifle in 45-70. The recoil is a bit stiffer than my 45-70 TC Contender with muzzlebrake in rifle format; so for a 45-70 with an 18 inch barrel, I'd recommend the Guide Gun in the ported version if you can find it.
But ported or not, the 1895 is a joy!

Sweet, yeah I like the ported version a lot better. My Mossberg 835 is ported and the recoil is quite different from the non-ported versions.

:D I"ve got an 1895 45-70 rifle with the long barrel because of the ranges where I hunt, also I like to get all of the velocity that I can from my handloads,i.e. more energy. Not ported. If I were to get a short 1895 It would DEFINATELY be ported-just to keep the muzzle down! :sniper:

Does anybody know why Marlin eliminated the ports on the current-production Guide Guns?
I've been looking for a ported 1895GS for some time now and I haven't found one yet.
Thanks in advance.
:o KABOOM in a deer stand, those ports are loud!.they were worried about getting sued for hearing damage to hunters(no ear plugs).I heard that on the old marlin forum that marlin was going to start replacing ported barrels for $35.00.????
I have a ltd 45/70 and love it my bud has a guide gun and loves it ports and all but for real they are plenty loud.

txpete,
Thanks for the response. I have a 444P Outfitter with a ported barrel and it is LOUD, but I like the gun a lot. I think that the ported barrel helps with recoil, but I haven't done a side-by-side comparison. I hope that all of that extra noise is doing something.
It's really a shame that Marlin is forced to worry so much about litigation. I miss their message board. I never registered, but I managed to read many posts before their lawyers told them to shut it down.

I have a marlin 1895SS :D And its a great gun.But I do not care for the ones with ports they are to loud for me.They make my ears ring for hours afther I shoot them. But you would be hard pressed to find a 45/70 any better than the 1895.

adaman04,
45/70 is an excellent round. i have never had or shot a 45/70 marlin, but they are heavy loaded and empty. they become unballanced if the ammo tube is full.
if you are a bolt person check out "gibbs rifles" no.4 mkII lee enfields rebarreled in 45/70. they use navy arms barrels and it has a 5 rd removable mag. $385 list.
I have a ltd II marlin 45/70 with a 24 inch oct. barrel.I don't find it heavy or un ballanced but yet again I used to carry a m-60
as they say if ya can't handle the recoil or the weight stay home and knit.

txpete,
i was just making a point of intrest on the balance point changing as ammo is added or removed. ;)
i love the stainless GG. but i am older now and the weight takes it's toll on my arthritic shoulders. my gibbs is 8 3/4 pounds empty. scope and mount only weight 12 oz. and OA length is 42"
i love torque and recoil, bring it on! i just can't hold heavy rifles very long. :cannon:
pretty beat up myself (100% va.disabled vet)I still take the marlin out for hunting.there is just something about being out with a lever rifles in the woods.oh yea gotta say the iron sight are getting fuzzy too.

I broke down today and went to BiMart and plooped some overtime dough on a new 1895G in 45/70. It will be used in the coast range this fall for elk. I am thinking of maybe adding a low power scope ( 2 or 3 pwr maybe) for low light conditions but more than likely it will be open sights this year.

gossman,
i just finished reading the article in "american rifleman" on the new ss gg from marlin. 18" barrel & 7.5 pnds. i just have to have one. i will probably get rid of all the others. the article says they want $750 smr. will i really have to part with that much cash?
i have a spare 1x4x20 leoupold VX II that only weighs 9oz. i know right where it's going too. you might check out "midway" they have had big sales on their leoupold stock. i have seen this one on sale for about $50 less than cabela's reg price.
good shooting/hunting, give us a report on it asap.
steve
p.s. if you need a scope and can't fund it right now for this season, you can borrow my spare. just pay shipping and insurance. i am all set for hunting this year so you are more than welcome to use it.
Thanks swill, but I think that I will give it a try with open sights this year. I paid $399 for the blued version I got in the 1895G. It weighs in at 7 1/2 lbs and has the short barrel. A hunting buddy was looking at it today thinks looks like a shotgun out the end. I am hitting the range in the AM since I don't start work until the afternoon. I will give a range report on it maybe in the evening! :cannon:

;) Hey Gossman;I believe that I live near you-Oregon,I have a 1895 in the rifle,22"+.45-70,and use it for east side hunts in timber off horseback.I found that the ghost ring sights(if you like Peepsights)work well in the low light conditions, plus give a great field of view.Find them in the blue press from Dillon if you're interested. gossman,
back when this topic was HOT i ran down to my wal-mart to price the 1895G ($409). last week (1/19) i went to wal-mart to buy groceries and a guide gun. when i got there the cuboard was bare. :( they were going to order it for me until the supplier told them they were out of all marlin 45/70's. the price had gone up to $495 too, if you could find one.
yesterday i went with a shooting bud of mine to a range/shop for some pistol practice. most all of the weapons in the shop are tactical types. i really had to look for hunting/lever rifles. in the back row, up high, behind the counter, we found a 1895G. i asked if the price tag was correct; they said "yes". i told them to take it off the shelf and get the box and i would pay for it after my range time. i got it for $430 w/tax (cheaper than wal-mart and he is a private dealer). my regular private dealer wanted $599.99 cash and $620 credit plus tax. he would have to order it too. i don't know where he would order from. if wal-mart can't get one, who could? i have this little silly grin on my face as i write.
now the hard part:
anyone, feel free to jump in. i know i recomended the 1x4x20 vxIII, but since this is such a short rifle, could we use "aimpoint" type "red dot" sights on this rifle? i do not ever expect to target game past 100yd and 50yd would be normal. i am thinking the agility of the carbine would be enhanced with a fast target acquisitioning sight system. i am considering the $90-$100 range offered in cabela's catalog.
am i way off here or could it happen?
thanks in advance,
steve
This last fall I purchased a new Marlin .45/70 gs model and I love it. $399 was the best price I found on sale. I didn't want to scope it but the one thing I hated was the cheesy sights so I bought the ghost ring set for it and it is now a real keeper. My buddies call it the "pumkin launcher" I have a friend that has the .450 Marlin with the ports, it is too loud to shoot hunting. The recoil is not that bad, especially with a good recoil pad on the butt.
swill, the aim point might not handle the recoil, maybe call them and ask. I had the same thought about those as a sight for my Marlin. But these ghost rings sure are great for 100 yards or so. I have had zero regret about my Marlin purchase.
I initially didn't want to scope mine too - than I got a nice Simmons for litle money and the Leupold quick release. Fits great and even the eye release is good enough to shoot heavier loads:

Tom
Tom, great looking rifle, glad to see the lock attached. Doesn't hurt to keep it safety locked even in a safe ( unless you leave the key in it :o ). I still don't think I want to scope my Marlin. The ghost rings are good and the distances I shoot elk at in the coast range don't streach the round. Anything over 100 or so yards I pack my .338
Here is a pic of my 1895M with Burris Scout scope. This setup works very well but does add a little weight out past the balance point. I actually like all leverguns better without scopes but my dang old eyes won't allow it.

Sweet rifle Rugmar. I like that scout setup. That is almost exactly what I would like to have!
Thank you very much! It works great and I like it so much that I'm in the process of obtaining a similar setup for my 1894ss in 44 mag. Only difference is I'm going with the Leupold Scout instead of the Burris this time. You can get it in silver and the Burris you can't. At least not that I have found.
Happy Shooting!
adaman04 - One word of caution, lever guns are addictive. I ignored them for years but once I bought my first one, I was hooked. I now have two and am looking at a third. oh well.....
I just picked up an 1895GS and I already love it! I'll be breaking it in this friday. I've been doing alot of research online and at the local dealerships and I've heard nothing but STELLAR reviews on this gun.

Hopefully I'll get to shoot it on friday, I'll let you know how it goes. I haven't bought ammo for it yet, but I'll probably start out with some 300 grain factory loads.
Dang, that's a nice gun. I wish they would have offered that stainless on the 1895M. I actually considered the GS because it looked so good but at the time I was looking nobody had one and the factory was saying they had backorders for months. Anyway....nice gun and I have no doubt you will enjoy it.
WOW!!! What a KICK! :cannon: This sucker is mean. I went ahead and bought a "Limbsaver" slip-on recoil pad to put on top of the stocker and I'm glad I did. Even the measly 300 grain Federals and Winchesters, people next to me were givin me dirty looks as the concussion rattled your gut and a giant cloud of dust obscured the target area momentarily. Lots-o-fun, though. I can't wait to put a scope on it and try some hotter loads. :ar15:
What a nice looking gun you got! Congrats. I am sure it was a lot of fun shooting it the first time. After getting used to the recoil (it took me about 100 rounds or so) leave the pad out and then you may want to look at reloading - it dropped the price from about $1/round to about 28 cents for the heavier loads (about 1900 fps vs. the aprox. 1300 you get with the factory ammo). If you want something with less kick, try some Cowboy loads with about 1000 fps and a price per round of about 15 cents (nearly as cheap as .22LR  )
Tom
FYI:
I split my nose open on Friday messing around with a scope and some Winchester 300 grainers, (the cheap ones, not the Supreme Nosler Partitions). No recoil pad this time, good grief does this thing pack a wallup. I figured the Remington 405gr would be even worse, wrong! The Remingtons felt like I was shooting a .22! Walmart sells the Remington stuff for $19 a box, so I guess that's my new plinking ammo, (at least until I start reloading).
adaman04

$19 bucks a box for the cheap stuff is crazy. I definitely need to start reloading if I am going to evert get a 1895G. :o
tlrpunk - another good reason to go with the scout setup. I banged myself with my .450 several times before I switched to the Burris Scout. I would shoot it a few times and then the next thing you know I would get comfortable and ....Bam!
Never got hit hard enough to get cut but it sure got my attention. Enough of that.
thats a sweet gun, i was at a cabelas today in wheeling, west virginia, about a 4 hour drive from cincinnati, i was able to check one out in the stainless steel like yours, its a dang nice gun, im envious, considering picking one up for myself
I have a 1895GS just like the one pictured above and wondering if anyone reloads and would share some of there favorite loads for the 45 70 . The 1895G was my first lever gun too. Always been facinated by them, so I bought a new one at the last gun show. Blue, 18.5" ported barrel. $400 out the door.
Went over to the Miwall distributor and picked up an assortment of amm. 300gr, 405gr and 500gr lead. $12.95/20 for the 300 & 405, $13.95/20 for the 500. You can get it online at http://www.outdoormarksman.com
I really like the versatility of the 45-70. I was originally looking at the .450 Marlin because it packed more uumph. Thing is, it hits hard all the time. With the 45-70, you can get the light stuff like the Miwall (standard 45-70 loads), or you can get the hot stuff like the PMC 350gr +P+ ammo. The standard 45-70 stuff is supposed to generate right about 20,000psi. By comparison, the .450 Marlin stuff generates 43,500psi. The +P+ makes 37,000psi. So with the 45-70, you can get the bang of a .450 if you really want it, or shoot the standard light stuff for a nice all around gun.
Like the one guy said though, it's a sickness - a disease. Once I got this one, I now want more. :)
Hi guys!
I just have to post some pic's of my Marlin GG. The scope that I'm using is a Aimpoint 7000.

Is that a 45/70 or a 450? What do you think about the Aimpoint?
Nice looking gun! Good Shooting!
Hi rugmar!
The caliber is 45/70.
I think that the Aimpoint sight is the best sight on the market today. It's easy to use, just put the dot on the target and pull the trigger.
/Pantzer
hey pantzer, thats a cool scope, but how accurate is it out to 50 yards or more
Hi MIK911,
The Aimpoint scope is very accurate up to 300m and its parallax free. The reason for me to choose this scope is for the hunt on wild boar that we have on our hunting grounds. When shooting with this scope you have both your eyes opened for faster target tracking and just keep the dot on the target and let the bullet fly.
We also have the Aimpoint system on all of our service rifles in the Territorial Army. So it Can’t be that bad.... :ar15:

Taken two moose with my guidegun this year, and a roedeer so far.
My load gives 2100fps with Hornadys 350FP, found no bullets.
Send PM for details
those aimpoints sound pretty cool, i might have to pick one of those up, whats a good price on them
and what exactly does paralax free mean, because ive heard a few different definitions
Hi MIK911!
This is what Aimpoit has to offer in the way of info on Parallax free

WHY AIMPOINT® SIGHTS
http://www.aimpoint.com/cache/ttf/0eeac37c50eebb9101.jpg
Because Aimpoint® sights can be used with both eyes open, your field of view is unlimited at any distance. Eye relief is also unlimited, so your eye’s position behind the sight does not affect how well you see the target or the aiming point.
The bright red dot is very easy to see and your eye instinctively aligns it with your target. Unlike the lenses in cheaper red dot sights, Aimpoint’s lenses transmit nearly 100% of all wavelengths of light. This means that colors appear natural and are not distorted. Because of Aimpoint’s unique double lens system, the sights are parallax-free, meaning that no matter where on the lens you see the dot reflected, your point of aim will be your point of impact.
Shots that have to be fired with little time to think are always difficult. At these times it doesn’t matter if the range is short or long or if the target is standing still or moving. It is in such situations that Aimpoint proves its superiority over all other sights.
Illustration 1
This is how the Aimpoint principle works: the red light from the LED is reflected back to your eye from the front lens (double lens). All other light passes through unobstructed.
http://www.aimpoint.com/upload/images/rit1.gif
Illustration 2
The difference between Aimpoint’s solution…
Regardless of where you position your eye, the re flection of the LED is always parallel with the sight’s optical axis thanks to the design of the double lens and its light refraction property. The points of aim and impact always coincide.
http://www.aimpoint.com/upload/images/rit2.gif
Illustration 3
…and other sights.
The conventional lens used in the majority of red dot sights gives an angled reflection when the dot is not centered on the lens. The farther from the center of the lens you have the dot, the greater is the deviation from the optical axis. In this case the point of aim and the point of impact can never be the same.

I love mine. I have a blued version that came factory with the XS sights. I understand they're hard to find stock that way now.
Anyway, the only thing I would change is to have one in stainless. Marlins don't rust very much even when abused, but the stainless would make me feel better.
I did add the 3lb no flop Alaskan trigger, red aluminium follower and forward scope mount with a NCStar 4x scope. I couldn't help myself. The one they have on the web site just called to me but I couldn't pay the price for a whole package.
I use it now as a winter truck gun. I know I will have no under penetration problems with it and follow up shots and close at hand with a quick lever flip.
$19 bucks a box for the cheap stuff is crazy. I definitely need to start reloading if I am going to evert get a 1895G. :o

Have any of you fed your guide guns with the new Hornady Lever Revolution ammo? Has anyone found those bullet available to reloaders?

Reluctant to do so; I am relying on bullet shapes as my last failsafe to segregate ammo for my 1895GG (JHP or JFN), my 1895CB (LFN), and my Contender w/ 16-1/4" 45-70 bbl (she gets the pointy stuff).
Last thing I need would be to have two types of pointy 45-70's around me; only one of which would work in a lever.
 This new 'pointed' ammo has a soft tip, it's designed to use in lever actions. As soon as I can find some, I'm going to try it in my guide gun.:D

Understood, and the tip is a colored plastic, so it won't look like a Barnes SSP. But if I'm going to use the Hornady lever-revolution ammo, for my own comfort, I'd need to use up my loaded Barnes bullets first.
Also, I'd be more interested in the bullet itself, rather than loaded ammo.

That new lever ammo definitely looks promising. The .45-70 still drops like a rock, but that's a lot of knockdown power once it hits. I fear that if I find a good deal on a Guide Gun it will be hard to pass up even though I'm telling myself I'm going to get a new shotgun and pistol first, since my last purchase was a rifle. Ahhh, the tangled webs we weave.
Hey guys! Just bought a Marlin 1895GS 45 70 in stainless at a steal! NEVER FIRED! $450.00. I am going to put a stainless scope and a good sling on it, then go to the range and have a ball!
Well put up some pics.
Just some food for thought ......I've got a Marlin guide gun like yours but mine is a .450 and it is blued. I've also got a 1894 in 44 mag that is stainless. I thought as you stated that a silver scope would look best on the stainless and so I put a silver Leupold Scout scope on it. Didn't do much for me .... I'm wishing I had gone with black. In fact, I'm thinking of switching the scopes on these two guns but right now they are both sighted dead on and I just hate to mess that up. Maybe another day.
All I'm sayin is look at a black scope on your gun before you buy. You just might be surprised.

I used to have a stainless Marlin 917VS and even though it is not a lever like your guns I was debating whether or not to put a silver scope on it. Decided on black and it looked real good with the gray laminate stock as the silver scopes did not match the silver barrel good.
Oh, one other little piece of info for you. Do yourself a favor and put a decent piece of glass on this gun regardless of the color you choose. The kick from the .45-70 will destroy a cheap scope in short order. Knock the crosshairs right out of 'em.
Mind your eye relief as well. It sucks to get wacked with a scope.
After giving it some thought, and considering the black sights, I believe I will go with the black scope. It will probably look better.
"Mind your eye relief as well. It sucks to get wacked with a scope."
I will definately watch the eye relief. I have never shot a 45 70, but it sounds like you speak from experience. Thanks for the heads up!
Congrats and welcome to the team! You won't regret your new cannon. Lots of fun, and you definately picked the more powerfull finish(stainless adds at least 1000 lbs of muzzle energy ;).
I can vouch for the eye relief consequences. I had a good whack between the eyes before I started paying more attention. Nice and bloody. :)
I took my 1895 GS 45-70 to the range today for the first time. All I can say is.......WHOA! WHAT A RUSH! What a lot of power packed in that little package!
I am pleased with the way the rifle handles, and with the 'Limb Saver' the recoil is not bad. GREAT RIFLE!

I am looking for a pretty acurate load they works for Elk . I have been trying a few different loads but I appreciate any help . Thanks :usa:
Here's my favorite load for my 1895SS:
300gr JHP (Hornady or Remington)
38.0 gr of H4198
Winchester Mag Primer
Winchester brass
In lead:
350 gr Brass Plus RNFP (round nose flat point)
33.0 gr H4198
Winchester Mag Primer
Winchester brass
The lead loading was found so that I could duplicate my jacketed loading and shoot at our clubs levergun shoots. They aren't the top of the power scale, but have never let me down when hunting. When it hits, the target ;) drops NOW! This is my favorite deer hunting claiber/weapon, and has been for many years now.
And just to tease anyone out there who is looking for a used 1895, I picked one up from a private seller 1 1/2 months ago for $300. It was an 1895SS, exactly the same as my first one. They were only made one year apart according to serial numbers, and in excellent shape! What makes this even sweeter for me is that a friend is buying the scope off of the rifle from me, so the price drops down to $250! Can't beat that with a big stick!
I'm thinking of mods for this one already. I've already put a Limbsaver on it, as the original 1895 wears a Pachmeyer recoil pad, and I have found the Limbsavers to be the best for me. I'm thinking along the lines of shortening the barrel, and different sights, ahhh....the possibilities.
I bought my 1895 gs brand new out the door for $400.00 Shop owner said a man bought it, took it home, his wife said NO! So he had to take it back the same day, so the shop owner had to sell it as used. GREAT DEAL! New at used price.

I just put an alaskan follower and trigger kit in mine. Thought it was a lot of money to spend on a trigger untill I shot it the first time. No creap and no overtravel. Can't recomend it enough.

Do you mean the "Wild West Guns" trigger or is there another version on the market?
Hey guys! Just bought a Marlin 1895GS 45 70 in stainless at a steal! NEVER FIRED! $450.00. I am going to put a stainless scope and a good sling on it, then go to the range and have a ball!
I finally got the chance to post some pics of my new toy. I LOVE THIS RIFLE!

That's what I thought. I wasn't aware of another drop in trigger on the market and I was curious.
The trigger pull is that much better than the factory? Advertising from companies always seem to make things "better" than they may be, and I'm just wondering from a customer that has one.

Yep, that much better. I think anyway. I put one in my 45/70 and now I'm buying one for my 336. If I owned another Marlin lever, I'd buy one for it too.
No "trigger flop" and it breaks clean with no creap.
my new 1895SS data on the target.damn these rifles shoot:D

I have had my blue guide for about 4 years now, here is a
link that has some great stories of african hunts that the
marlin guide was used. Also some of the hardest hitting ammo
on the market.

Glad you are happy with your new "toy". Stainless, short barrells and that awful button safety on the side are not to my taste, but can't fault the choice of the Marlin 1895 or the .45-70. Searched until I found an older 1895 myself (blue steel, no safety and 22" barrell) and have never regretted it a moment.
Garrett ammo is something too. Always worried that some day I would step out on the back deck and find an angry Rhino in the yard. Now I have the gun to cover it if it happens.........my better half says its quite unlikely in East Texas, but you never know. Better safe than sorry, and an excellent excuse for a new toy.
I had an unnerving experience recently with this rifle. Using 325 gr. Hornady LeveRevolution ammo, I had a serious jam while trying to chamber a round. I had to pull the live round (jammed between the tubular magazine and the breech) out with my knife.
Is this a common problem? What could cause this? How often should you take apart the action mechanism and have it cleaned?
Is there any way to minimise this risk while still using this ammo (to make a 200 yard shot a real possibility). I love this gun for bush hunting, but now my confidence is blown.
Another question: how wise is it to hunt with a round chambered and the hammer block safety and half-cock engaged? This is likley the only viable option for sdtill huntign becuase it is impossibnle to load a round quitly with this action - the jam occurred when I was trying to load one slowly (to mimic a hunting situation).
Advice appreciated. :(

By working that Marlin action slowly, you probably ended up with that jam. Have you had any while doing it normally (fast/faster)? And why not hunt with a round in the chamber? Way before lawyers decided that we weren't smart enough for ourselves, the levergun had been used for over a hundred years with only halfcocks for a safety mechanism.
Thanks for the advice. I will hunt with a round loaded and use the hammer block and half-cock safety. Personally, I'm leery of the half-cock alone. Hopefully I don't forget about the safety when a bull elk comes crashing toward me though! :o
My 1895M willl jam occasionally just as you described. Only with the Leverevolution stuff though. Not sure why. It never misses a beat with the regular Hornady rounds.
Anyone care to tell me why or if there is a fix?

:o
anyone, feel free to jump in. i know i recomended the 1x4x20 vxIII, but since this is such a short rifle, could we use "aimpoint" type "red dot" sights on this rifle? i do not ever expect to target game past 100yd and 50yd would be normal. i am thinking the agility of the carbine would be enhanced with a fast target acquisitioning sight system. i am considering the $90-$100 range offered in cabela's catalog.
am i way off here or could it happen?
thanks in advance,
steve
An aimpoint or some other kinda dot sight would be the only optics I'd use on this gun.
Have any of you fed your guide guns with the new Hornady Lever Revolution ammo? Has anyone found those bullet available to reloaders?
- Dave
Nope. And those bastards at Hornady need to get on the stick about selling them as components. I'm not paying premium price for their ammo. I load my own for a reason.

You have someone else clean your guns?

Unload your gun, and try like hell to get it to fire with the safeties on. If it won't fire when you're trying to defeat the safeties, it shouldn't fire on accident.
