View Full Version : Wolf Ammo for Mini 14
Anyone used Wolf ammunition before? They are very cheap at cheaperthandirt.com and I was wondering if they're any good before I buy myself 500 rounds for $59. It's 55 gr, full metal jacket, boxer primed, with steel case.
Some of it is good, some of it is not so good. I'd get a box or three and try it before buying a case. The SilverBear 62gr. stuff has been highly praised have ya tried it? A lot of mini's don't like 55gr. ammo. Here's a link to AimSurplus (http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/_223.html), they have some good prices also.
I've only used 55 grain from Winchester at walmart, and sometimes, the shell casing doesnt get extracted out of the chamber and I get a jam. I', wondering, since you've mentioned that a lot of mini's don't like 55 grain, if it has to do with my jam. Also, what is a better grain to use....just for target shooting though.

Hey airikem. When we say our mini doesn't like it we usally mean accruacy wise. As far as reliability I haven't found any ammo my mini won't cycle. My mini likes Winchester 45 grn varmint. About 1 1/2" groups with it after bedding the stock, trigger job, and pinning on a muzzle brake. I don't think ammo is your problem. Check your other thread for more info.
for Wolf .223 ammo, which one is better, 55 gr or 62 gr?

I just shot up the last of my 55 gr JHP Wolf ammo. The only problem I had was the occaisonal stovepipe. My mini just doesn't like extracting the steel cases compared to the brass ones. On the positive side, I got pretty good accuracy out of the stuff, but it was dirty as f*ck. I'd recomend cleaning every 50 rounds and a complete breakdown/clean every 200 rounds if you decide to try it.

The Wolfs are a little dirtier, but I have never haid a Failure to Feed or Fire, and the hollow point 55-gr loads are very accurate. For me at least.

Same here. Wolf is my best bud!

Has anyone but me had problems with the Wolf HPs not opening? I do like the accuracy, but if it won't open it's useless to me. Did I get a bad case (they were all sequentioal lot numbers) or does this happen accross the board?
Has anyone tried the Remington remanufactured ammo from cabela's? It's about the same price.
HI guys....I have been told by gunmakers and 'smiths that the steel cased bulk ammo such as Wolf etc. will eventually cause extractor breakage in non-military firearms. SKS and AK 47's are apparently okay, but I have been told that the Mini 30s and 14s are not "military" extractors and will be damaged by the steel cases on these rounds. Of course, this is after I have bought a few thousand rounds. Does anyone have any input on this matter? Have any of had or heard of such a problem as extractor breakage with the bulk ammo? Would hate to be firing away and suddenly "CLICK"....
My mini 30 is currently in Colorado being rebarreled, accurized, etc. Will let you all know the results.
Thanks,
Don

For those of you that have tried, how much more accurate are the HPs over the FMJs. I have such a good source for FMJ ($2.16) that it would be a shame they are not the most accurate cheap stuff I could find. It's been a while since I shot the HPs so I really can't remember how they shot in my mini. I also never shot them after I accurized my mini.

They seemed to shoot quite a bit tighter in mine ... the 62 grain FMJ shot just as well as the 55 gr JHP in mine, course I shoot at 50 yards for punchin' paper ... no scope.
Oh yeah, Cabela's has it for $97.99 for a thousand, 55 JHP, 55 FMJ and 62 FMJ

Wolf isn't good for anything other than throwing a few volleys. I use something at least Winchester white box level for anything important.

For anything important I use my 30-06 or shotgun slugs, for plinkin', paper targets or small critters Wolf works fine for me, and I get good accuracy in my mini with it.

All I use is Wolf or Silver Bear, in both 55 and 62 gr. Never had a problem with either, and since its cheap, I can shoot more often.
I've put probably about 500 rounds through my Mini-14 so far. 140 of them were surplus 5.56 NATO out of Australia (produced in 1983), and the rest were a mix of Winchester 55 gr. FMJ and Remington 55 gr. FMJ -- all I use. I've never had a jam or any other kind of failure caused by the ammunition and I hope I never do. The accuracy I get right now is appropriate also...I think anyway...
Haven't really committed myself to a paper target but with my RR using the iron sight and standing with no support other than a sling I can hit a soda can at 25-30 yards on the first shot as fast as I can raise, aim, and squeeze the trigger. As far as real world application goes I'd argue that's pretty decent at the least
I've always shot mostly Wolf 55 gr. Never seen 62 gr. hp around here. Only problem I have is after 200 rounds the chamber gets gummed up and the bolt won't come back. Had to hit it with the heel of my hand to break it loose on every round after that. Maybe because I used a medium gas bushing it just isn't putting enough pressure against the op rod after getting dirty to eject  I've been using Winchester white box and so far I like it. Wolf is easier to find around here. Something called Ultramax here too but even the guy at the ammunition counter won't recommend it. So far as extractor breakage, I've fired over 1500 rounds of Wolf and other than what I mentioned above, hav'nt had a problem. After cleaning mini fired and cycle just fine.

Any difference between the wolf and the silver bear in cleaning? I see the silver bear is zinc plated where the wolf is lacqueored steel.

I didn't mean anything against Wolf, it's just that it is steel cased which has to be hard on the rifle...and the smell!
