There was quite a few 99's made over the years, but which one do you relish the most. Mine is a 99C in 243 and a 99C in 308. Got a thing about C's I guess, just hate levering shells out at the end of the day.

Lets here from you 99 nuts on this subject.

My only Savage, so I guess it's my favorite. 99F in .308. Delight to carry and a bitch to shoot from the bench, but has accounted for a couple of deer.

They made one that had a compass in the butt plate, I cannot remember which model it was but my cousin has one. Will get back on this model asap.

I have shot a lot of rifles but the 99 comes to my shoulder better than most.

We have a family heirloom of sorts a Savage 99 in .308 Win wearing a Redfield 4x scope. It was my great grad-dad's originally. And between him, my dad, my uncle, and me it has brought alot of deer to the freezer. Some day I hope it will come live with me permanently. I always wanted another one in .358Win, but they are hard to find.

Our family hunts with 99's, mostly A's, I have a 99CD. My 99CD has been coated by Robar with Roguard on the outside and coated on the inside with their NP3. This year I sent it out to Williams Triggers and had them reduce the trigger pull down to 4 lbs. , and have topped it off with ConeTrol bases and rings for my Leupold scope. I haven't been out to shoot it yet but it is bore sighted and ready to go.

my aunt had a model 99 in a 300 caliber. she was only 4 ft 11 but i swear on a stack of bibles she brought home more deer and elk with that thing than any other gun she could fire. i even had the guts to call her mrs deadshot  i miss her dearly.

Got a buddy with a 99 that he bought new in the early '60's, I am not a fan of the buckhorns but that .300 Savage is a tack shooter. Been looking around for a .308 in a mag fed but want an earlier model, the ones I have seen seem a little fat in the foreend. I am not willing to mortgage the farm though, I would get a new 110 instead. :D

Model 99c in 308 not a tack driver but enough gun that I do use it occasionally. I bought it as a loner for my huntin buddies. ended up lovin it for myself. I dont loan this gun out.

I have an older model 99, made in 1923, that shoots 22 HiPower. I love this thing, everything from its brass counter windows to its near perfect heft.

I had one in .308, but found it to be very brass sensitive. The accuracy was okay, but just okay. I traded it to a buddy who HAD to have it. I always wanted one in .358. I've never found one, but am still looking.

I picked up a Model F in .308 win from an older guy who stated he could not hit a bull in the ... with it. Rifle was in nice shape with bases but no scope. With a lighted peek down the bore... I could see rifeling. I am not kidding on this...It took at least 100 patches with hoppies and Sweets 7.62 before I scrubbed the crud out. I really DO believe that the preveious owner used fuel oil as a bore cleaner. But she has a crud free bore now and shoots around 1 1/4" or better at 100 yds with my handloads and a 3x9x40 bushnell Banner scope until that skinny barrel heats up. Quick and light - should be a very good deer rifle. Even with that skinny butt plate , recoil is not bad at all. Nice Rifle.

Know this is an old thread, but I'm fairly new here and love the Savage 99. Maybe other newcomers will have comments too.

As I said I love the 99 and presently own 9 of them.........250-3000, .30-30, .300 Sav, .303 Sav, .308 Win, and my newest jewel .358 Win.

I am sort of old fashioned I guess, I like the older styles with the safety on the lever and the small snobble forearm. Preferably with a pistol-grip and checkered stock. Most of my 99's are pre-war models for this reason.

Never really liked the top safety and certainly don't care for the detatchable magazines. I love that brass counter on the side so the "C" models never were a favorite either.

However, I've never actualy met a 99 I didn't like so have owned most every model and variation at one time (at the peak of my madness I owned 19 Savages).

Have shot every caliber ever chambered in the 99 except the Hi-Power (and I'll correct that oversight some day). My favorite Savage has ben for years a Model EG in .250-3000, but I fear her days at the top of my list are numbered.

My newest, a .358 Win. Featherweight, is pushng hard for the top honors. I searched for more than 15 years for a .358 and it will probably be my favorite...........until I see the next sexy 99 calling to me.

Thanks for reviving this thread, Rick! I never even knew it was here!

I have two, actually one is a model 1899 made before 1910 in .303 Savage. It has the tang peep sight behind the receiver. I don't shoot it much but I love to look at it and handle it.

The other is also a pre-WWII EG model in .250-3000 that is my primary deer rifle. It has the brass cartridge counter, lever-safety and schnabel fore-arm, topped with an older Leupold 2x7.

The best and most beautiful lever-actions ever made, in my opinion!

Wow!!

Prewar EG, with lever safety schnabel forearm, and in .250-3000............sounds like my own long-time favorite.

You are obviously a gentleman and a scholar.........and have damned fine taste in rifles

That is a good looking rifle Boogy! How do you compare the Win 88 or the BLR with the Savage 99? Do you own either of those?

Well, I may be a bit biased, but to me the 99 is the best. The BLR comes close though, I had one in .308 and sold it like a dumba$$. I'd love to get another in .243.

No offense to Winchester fans, but the only one I ever liked was the Browning-designed Model 1895. The rest all seemed to have stiff, clunky actions and jammed a lot.

My 99 is the fastest. slickest, most accurate and reliable lever-gun I've ever shot, period.

Just my opinion, boys.... no offense! ;)

I am not sure the model number, but I inherited a 99 from my Dad. He bought the rifle in 1939, although we were not at war yet, selling of rrifles was limited to farmers and ranchers for pest control. My dad kept track of the number of deer and elk that were taken with it unitl his death in 1971. He managed to fill his tag every year. The rifle has a redfield scope that flips to the side so that you can use the iron sights.

I have 2 99's. A later model 308 with the spool mag and a 1920 vintage 99F takedown in 250-3000 with a schnabel forend. I just got an old Redfield peep for the .250 on E-Bay. That gun has the best trigger of any lever gun I have ever fired. The old 250 out shoots the .308 every time, but I like em both!
