View Full Version : Rugers
Alright now lets stir things up a little. Why do you like Ruger semi-autos?
Big, chunky, terrible trigger pull what else is wrong with them? Your comments are eagerly anticipated.

I agree with a lot of what you said. They aren't the most ergonomic handgun, or the prettiest. Although, my dad has a P89 and it has never failed to fire, feed, or eject. Also, their price is appealing to many. That's why a lot of people like them, I'd say.
I have 2, a P85 and 3 pre ban 15s, and a P91, I like the price and I can shoot well with either. My brother has a Glock in the 40 cal and I don't like the feel. I bought mostly for price and the P85 was my first. I did like the Berretta 96 my buddy had and it would shoot well. I handload for both guns makes cheap to shoot.

i bought a p90 to use the same ammo as my colt 1911 ser "70". mistake; the handle was too wide for my grip to hold on with the recoil.
my first and only 9mm is a p89 DC loaded with speer gold dot +P hollow points for defence, plinking with FMJ nato surplus. it is much better for my grip now and has twice as many rounds in the same space. cheap too, you gotta love it!
I bought my P89 DC because it seemed like a lot of gun for the money. No plastic! It felt like I had something in my hand. I like the gun because it will eat anything. Never have had a FTF or FTE. Only when I put on hogue grips with finger grooves did I really fall in love with the gun. If you have a P89 and haven't done this yet, DO IT NOW!, I guarantee you'll love it. I have fairly small hands and it makes the grip actually seem smaller. :2guns:
I have a p94. Doesn’t point as well as the M9 I carry for war but some houge grips helped. It is self defense accurate about 5 inches from a rest at 25 yards. That said It is the most reliable thing on the range I feed it Olympic ammo at about $100 a thousand and it eats it all day long. I also occasionally feed it the stuff friends give a way or sell cheap because their fancy glocks and sigs won’t function without good ammo (Some won’t function with the cheaper lines from Winchester and Remington). My trigger isn’t to bad better than most and there are plenty of hi cap P89 mags out there which function just fine. Oh and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg for a stainless one.

I have p-89, Im gonna agree with malada on this one, you gotta have Hogue grips with finger grooves. i tried the pachmeyr, i didnt like them, that made the grips bigger than it already was. As far as reliability and durability, I would put it up against any other gun maker...you wont find a tougher pistol. I would however haveto say that it is not a target pistol, i wouldnt bet the farm with it in a shootout at the 10 ring. I have fed all kinds ammo thru it, quality ammo, mid grade and plain out junk ammo, and the only time it failed to feed was with a cheap after market mag that had been loaded with 17 rounds and left over a year that way. the factory mags have never failed even when loaded with full 15 rounds in the same time period. I would take my beretta 96 over it, but im not geting rid of it, because it is so much fun to make noise with. Just my 2 cents worth

I have a P-89C, the 9mm with a 30 Luger swap barrel and recoil spring. The 30 Luger barrel was the primary reason for buying the pistol, and after playing around with that caliber for a while I installed the 9mm innards kind of as an afterthought. DAMN! The critter shot almost as well as my SIG P-228.
I didn't buy the pistol with social engagements in mind, but I would carry it in harm's way if the need developed. It is utterly reliable in both calibers, and using the 9mm recoil spring assembly can enable some VERY creative muzzle velocities in the 30 Luger caliber--1500 FPS with Hornady 85 grain XTP's and a "rated R" amount of AA-7. It tears varmints up bigtime.
Heavy, clunky, great price, and dependable as any other pistol. Very tough if you are willing on packing a anchor on the side. :cannon:
I think everyone covered all the reasons. Myself I think the P90 is one of the best deals going for a good 45. Also my P89 has been very good to me. I also like to buy as many American made products as possible.
I'm surprised Ruger has'nt entered the compact autoloader market for concealed carry, most people don't care to carry full sized pieces. With Bill Sr. gone now we'll have to see what direction the company goes. They'd do well to introduce a small autoloader in the $340.00 range IMHO.
iv had a P-89T for 7 years and never had any problems with it at all. cheap stuff, expensive stuff...ate it all up. yes its beefy and whats part of what i like the most about it. you actually have something to HOLD ON TO! so many pistols iv shot just felt too slim and wimpy. the ruger series fits my hands nicley and has a comfortable feel. it has a decent ammount of aftermarket support, and it fit my budget. i was at CTD last weekend and saw some houge grips...i passed on them for now but after reading up here i may have to go back and get some. :D

I own a P-90 and whats not to like about it? Yea it may be a little chunky, have a "questionable" trigger pull, and have the looks of a cinder block but it's more than accurate at "personnel" range. And it's 110% relible with any ammo and built like an tank. I have around 10,000 rounds through mine and it's as tight as the day it came home with me.
just picked up a P97DC yesterday $400.00 OTD.hope to hit the range this weekend and give it a good workout.this will be my first ruger semi auto but not my first ruger.2 security sixs 6" and a 2 3/4",2 vaqueros 44-40,45 colt and a single six.
while the ruger might not be pretty lets she how she shoots..

txpete. I hope your 97 will be as gooda 45 as my 90 has been. Let us know. :2guns:
made it to the range today but it was a short vist due to thunder boomers.I put 130 rd's thru the P97DC.
brand new out the box,no one jam stove pipe ect.firing at 7 yards double taps it cut a ragged hole with my cast load.
200 gr lead swc my cast .452
4.3 gr's bullseye
rem brass
win lg. pistol primer
I took one mag and did 1 fmj.1jhp then a 1cast just mixed them up,no problems.
we did get to shoot at the steel targets at 15 meters and could hit the steel targets clang!.
I am very impressed with this pistol.I can't really report group size as we were just blowing off some rd's and get out before the storms set in.

sounds like you got a winner. My 45 acp. P90 beats my 9mm P89 in accuracy. Their both very dependable pistols with all the loads I've put through'm.
