View Full Version : what's your favorite semi auto pistol?
TwinRugers

Well, for me, I have never shot one, but my ideal autopistol is a Glock 20 w/ standard cap 15 round magazines full of ProLoad 10mm...
Glock in general is probably my favorite, do to sheer simplicity an durability.
I plan on my first centerfire auto pistols to be the Glock 20, and a Glock 23 for CCW purposes.
In fact, I even plan on buying standard cap mags for them as soon as they become available again, just so I will have them in case any crap happens again!
I also like Rugers cause they are fun and reliable pistols. I have never shot a 1911, but figure I will have to own one someday, thinking aluminum framed Commander.
Beretta makes a damn fine looking handgun, reliable too. I have heard they are quite accurate. May have to pick one up someday for a target pistol.
BTW, I sometime shoot my grandpa's Taurus PT101. That is a great handgun, but we are having some feeding issues with it at the moment. I am trying to solve them, but I haven't got it down yet.

Guess my vote is for the 9mm Glock 19; the wife and I both use one for a carry gun. It's small enough for IWB carry but large enough to have full control when it's in your hand, and ammo for practicing is very affordable. I've tried Beretta, Bersa, Taurus, Ruger, and Smith and Wesson. Mr preference is definately Glock. If I were to go for anything different it would be the .40 cal. of the same thing which I believe is the G23. :usa:

Beretta 96 FS Brigadier in 40 S&W
For me, my favorite semi would have to be the 1911 style. Now excluding the 1911 style of those that I currently have
25.......Bauer
380.....Colt Mustang+
9mm...Benelli B76 (hard choice here)
40.......CZ40b (here too)
357Sig.Glock 32
45ACP.H&K Compact (another hard choice)
Oh no :( , I see there are some glaring omissions here. Seems like I don't currently have a 32 or a 10. Guess I'll have to work on that.

I am going to have to go with the Browning Hi-Power, even though I have more faith in the .45ACP round. 1911 second, then Broomhandle followed by the P38 and Luger. Just can't warm up to plastic.
Have a Berreta 96 in 9mm, I have shot a Glock45, but always wanted a Sig-Sauer p229 in 357 sig. After shooting and holding some other model glocks, I like the way the Sig Sauer feels better.
I am going to have to go with my Glock 19 9mm great small frame gun.

This is a good one. :D
I'd have to say Glock 26...and a Glock 18 :D
Ed Brown Cobra 1911. His place is within driving distance of my home.
Smith & Wesson 4506 .45
Colt Gov't Model .380
I know, I know...but Smith & Wesson Sigma Enhanced 9mm. 100% reliability, Glock design for half the price.
My choice is an HK USPf 9, although I still want the .45 version. :usa:
Well I chose 2 models of the SIG/Sauer line...P226 and the P239 both 9MM.
I loved the way they felt in my hands and upon further investigation I found
that they tied or bettered the Barreta 92 model in Gov. testing for the military.
If you want a quality hand gun that's also accurate you can't beat the SIG line. Several departments of the FBI carry SIGS, they come in 9mm,357sig, .40cal, and .45.

Without a doubt it would have to be the CZ-75! The pointability, reliability and the way it fits my hand like a glove! :2guns:
Ruger P89-Sturdy and reliable
Tankcommander

My favorite has to be the pistol I started with the 1911. It was my first issued pistol as a tanker and I always had a love for it. I now have 2, a Colt series 70 Goldcup and a Para-ordnance 14-45 LDA. The Para is my current favorite right now. Also having used the 1911 and M92 in the Army I have to say the 1911 was the better pistol.
TC :cannon: and :2guns:
I have to go with the Glock. They are as ugly as sin - but shoot so well
Glock 22 Duty
Glock 23 Plain Cloths
Glock 27 Off duty
:D :D :D
After years of 1911 ownership I broke down this year and bought a Springfield XD that's rapidly becoming my favorite.

:o
my colt govt. model, series "70" in nickel w/pachmyer insert rosewood grips and black matte finished safety, slide and mag, release and beaver tail saftey w/lanyard ring. i have had this since new in 1974 and added to it over the years. :2guns:
1st & foremost: stock Gvt 1911a1; AMT, Colt, or Essex-frame govt surplus :-)
2nd: Star PD
And the one I've shot the most: Ruger Mk II.
I've tried double-stack double-action 9's & 45's, but I just prefer the simplicity & fit of a single-stack 45.
Rapidly climbing the charts with me is my CZ 75 P-01. The more I shoot this 9mm, the more I like it. It's as accurate as either of it's full-size brothers, one in 9mm and the other in .40 caliber. Smaller, but only 1 less round in the magazine, using .40 caliber compact mags. The M3 accessory rail is available for light/laser use.
Gets my vote.

My off duty handgun (Kahr K9) gets my vote hands down as a discreet carry gun. There are lighter and prettier 9mm's, but, I have yet to fire one that feels as natural, or consistently hits exactly where I point it. No Failures, no horror stories, and it digests my Department's service rounds without a hiccup.
Now, if I could carry ANYTHING I wanted, I'd spring for one of those super high speed custom 1911's that never miss a beat.... With an arched mainspring housing :2guns:
1911, P7M8, HP, Makarov; no particular order, sleep soundly or walk thru the "valley" with any of them.

My Ruger Mark 2 Competition Target .22lr "Slabside" :trooper:
Have to go with my Kahr K40 Covert. It replaced my Walther PPK as my CCW piece. :2guns: Dead accurate, easily concealable, price was good, eats anything, and the smoothest DAO trigger I've ever pulled. I liked this gun so much I went out and bought a second Kahr, an Elite 98 K40, which I've also been happy with. For the $ these are some GOOD guns!:2guns
The first pistol I bought when I was of legal age to do so was a 5906 S&W, and it has stayed with me through different phases of 1911 to Glock to Sig back to 1911 to 1911 Commander to etc, etc., etc.
I recently re-entered a 1911 phase when I got my RIA .45, but I think I would have to pick the Smith (9 years and still going :D ).

My Sig Sauer P226 two tone. Won several shooting competitions with it. Very accurade and feels great! I'd love to get a Beretta 92f though. Anyone ever used both have any comment on how they compare?
Browning Buckmark circa 1988! Have owned quite alot of pistols and this is my favorite even though it is a .22lr. My 2nd would be any old 1911 that functioned properly, I have had too many that were too picky and frustrating but I love the design. :2guns:
Sig Sauer P228.
My first and only handgun. Well, I'm kinda new to all this. Don't know if I'll ever get another, but that little 9mm will certainly do me for the time being.

No contest: full sized Kimber 1911 45acp.
favorite for what? Hunting squirrels, varmints, deer? Metallic silohuette matches? Bullseye matches? Plinking? Open wear defense? Deep concealment, wearing swim trunks? Whether a ratchet or a hatchet is best depends on whether you are turning bolts or trimming limbs, eh?

Well since it doesn't specify, I would say he means overall favorite. If he wanted to know what your favorite was while wearing a leopard print thong, he would have put that in the title.
When I am wearing a leopard print thong I wear a dainty single shot deringer. But that wouldn't be a semi would it? Benji, you are a buffoon. :cannon:

I had two Lugers that unfortunately I had to sell when I was unemployed, but I do enjoy my S&W 5906. I am of course thinking of going to a .45ACP but haven't decided on which yet, But I want something other than a 1911.

Hi,
I have shot a few semi-autos and my favorite is the little old .22lr Ruger Mark II target. That thing seems to find the target all by it's self. I own a stainless one and it is about the most accurate pistol I have used. I had a chance to shoot one with the heavy slab sided barrel and it too was dead on with respect to accuracy. The only complaint I could have is that these pistols are a bit picky with respect to ammunition.

You mean there is something other than a CZ, Glock and Ruger??

i have a tanfoglio ultra match 9 mm and a colt gold cup 45acp
i like the tanfoglio it shoots verry good and the ammo is cheap
i shot 2000 rounds with it and had no problems at all

I own a Springfield Armory 1911, blued, and with a lasergrips with the laser built in. I love to shoot it. It's not anything to hunt with though. I wouldn't mind carrying it , if I had a permit :2guns:
I can't choose just one favorite, so I'll have to list two: both in .40 caliber. My CZ 75B and my Browning High Power Mk III.
(Earlier in this thread, I said my CZ 75 P-01 - It really number three.)

2. Taurus PT-92 (15 round magazine) 9x19mm
3. Makarov 9x18mm
4. S&W 459 (Used to have one, loved it to death.) 9x19mm

Id like to mention my Kimber royal II 1911. I love the single stack, S/A trigger. Its pretty to look at, and shoots tight groups. Also I love My range beater, a SW 4046. After thousands of rounds it hasnt given me any grief, and its a breeze to clean. the two are complete opposites, but variety is the spice of life! ;)

Tough call here.....kinda depends on venue, I guess.
I would say a 1911A1 x 45 ACP for full-size pistol preference, and my East German Makarov for compact pistol. Neither is authorized by my agency, though.
For work, I use kind of a mixture of the two above pistols--a S&W M-4513TSW. It has really grown on me since I put it in service 4 years ago, and is my constant companion.
I'm not in uniform very much lately, but use a decrepit and utterly reliable M-645 for uniform duty. That old boat anchor has seen some real s--t over the years since it came on board in 1987, and still keeps on ticking after AT LEAST 20K rounds--and 5 slide stops.
For 22 LR, my Ruger 22/45 is great.
tough call...well, not really.
My favorite is my Kimber Gold Combat 1911. It shoots much better than I do, has a decent trigger right out of the box, and is very reliable.

I have a Glock 20(10mm), Glock 30(.45), SIG226(.40s&w) Colt Gov't 1991(.45), Ruger p-89(9mm)...but my favorite is gonna be a tie between my Beretta 96 40 cal..and my SIG Trailside .22.....The trailside is pushing pretty strong for the top spot....reason for that is the cheapness of ammo

After years of relying on Browing HP, and Colt Combat Commander 45, I have changed to a Sig 220ST for a 45 (who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks).
Carry the BHP on hip, and the 45 in a tac vest. LDG (last ditch gun) was Walther PPK, changed to Kel-tec 380, just changed again to Govt. 380.

I gotta say the old Walther PPK in 380. I know its a wimpy round, but I can consistently get 2 inch groups at 25 yards with slow fire, 4-5 with rapid fire (about 2+ a second). That is accuracy I cant argue with. The ergonomics are great, and the only problem I've had with mine is when the sear wore itself down to an autosear this fall (its had thousands upon thousands of bullets through it though). My dad took this particular gun to east germany in 63. He was questioned by some guard about it, and replied, "Every gentlemen carries a handgun." The guard saluted him as if he were an officer, and walked away!
I would have to say this one is my favorite to shoot, ParaOrdinanceP14.
I like the Glock 30 for carry.
Since I passed on my Colt Gold Cup Series 70 to my kid for graduation last June (..sob... sob), I guess my Kimber Custom II Target is next in line. But it's just not the same.

My all time favorite is the BHP, circa 1962. Been carrying it ever since. My second used to be a Combat Commander .45, preceded by a LW Commander .45. However a Sig 220ST now rides in my tac vest holster (the BHP is a strong side Askins Avenger carry). My hideout used to be a PPK, now is Kel-Tec .380.
