I built this up in 1999 before the latest California bans went into effect.
Built on a DSArms receiver and a StG-58 kit from InterOrdnance, I decided to build it up 'fancy' rather than cheaply.
The usual way to build up a kit to meet federal rules about domestic content is to replace the hammer, trigger, sear, among other parts, based on what's the cheapest part that qualifies as domestic content.
My buddy and I (he built one up nearly identically) decided to keep the original Stery trigger assembly (hammer, sear, trigger) and replaced other things. In my case, we use fancy furniture! We called up Ironwood and they had just had an order cancelled and were stuck with Claro Walnut stock, and so this went on as well.
I didn't refinish the StG-58 kit parts at all, so now it is a very cool mix of original semi-glossy black StG-58 paint/finish, flat black parkerized DSArms receiver, light grey parked charging handle (new domestic DSArms), flat black scope mount/dust cover (added after the photos were taken below), and the fancy wood.
Here it is after all was said and done:

Here is a close look at some of the wood

And here is the kit, loose.

You can still see the original white paint in the lettering on the gas adjustment.
