I'm thinking of purchasing my first shotgun (either a Moss 500 or a Rem 870, but THAT's another thread!). My question is, I'm a smaller gentleman at 5'4" and 160 pounds. Should I consider a youth model with its smaller dimensions? Or just go full-size? Thxx

If I were you I would handle 1 of each if possible and buy the 1 that comes to my shoulder best. I know thats not much help but there are to many variables for someone to give you a definative answer, arm lenth etc. I am just under 6 foot with fairly long arms but actually like the shorter stocks like the SKS and AK or my wifes NEF 410 youth model.

OK, that's some help anyway. The only shotgun I've actually handled (or shot, for that matter) was a Mossberg 500. It did feel perfect! Trouble is, I don't know if it was a regular sized gun or not. I did notice it was noticeably shorter than all the other shotguns around. Well, I'll see what they have lying around at the next gunshow.

Yeah, I would try both and see what you like. I have a Mossberg 500 Youth that is a great shooter. BUT, I'm about 6'1" and when I go to shoulder it, it passes me right up and the but sits on top of my shoulder. I think I'm going to get a full size stock and a longer barrel and make it my main bird gun. Who knows, we'll see. Good luck to you.

I havent posted here for quite some time. However, I have a Mossi 590 with full size stock and have been thinking about buying a youth stock to shorten length of pull. I would trade straight across if it would fit and if you are willing?

I use a standard 870 xpress model. I'm 5'3'. 112lbs.
I have been useing them for years now, for both work and play.
The only one that is too long for me is the Police Magnum.
Give them both a try and see how they fit.

Good Luck
