A jeweled bolt is for the purpose of holding lube on its surface. This is done on the shiny outside surface of the bolt. However this modification doesn’t do one thing for accuracy or reliability on your 10/22. It just makes it so purty you will get all kinds of compliments at the range. It is an eye catcher!

You will need a drill press, drill press vice, 1/4” stainless brush, and coarse valve lapping compound. Along with a straight edge and a couple of C-clamps.

The stainless brushes are carried by Brownells ENGINE TURNING BRUSH (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=608&title=ENGINE+TURNING+BRUSHES) . These are 3/16” when you get them use a piece of shrink wrap, or wrap a couple of wraps of electrical tape over the bristles to keep them from spreading. It will expand slightly to 1/4”. I tried 1/4" dowel rod, but it wasn't very forgiving. The brush does a much better job.

I strongly advise you to practice on a scrap piece of metal till you are confident in your technique, and result before you try this on your bolt!

Wrap your bolt with tape to protect it from the vice jaws. Insert 1/8” shims between straight, edge, and vice.

Set up your straight edge, and mark 1/8” marks on it. Chuck up your taped brush, and check it is even distance end to end of your bolt as you slide your vice/bolt along the straight edge. (Watch out your vice doesn’t fall of table of drill press!).

Wipe a coat of valve lapping compound. I used coarse. Set press to Hi-speed, I had mine low speed. At 650 rpm I used 10-second durations.

Now a couple of tips: (1) it is important you hold the vice/bolt tightly against the straight edge so it won’t vibrate. (2) Keep your head in the same spot watching the 1/8” marks on the straight edge. (3) Use only light constant pressure, to keep the brush from expanding out of spec. (You are not drilling thru, only abrading).

After each full length of the bolt, pull out 1ea. 1/8” shim. The idea is to overlap 1/8” center to center. This is what gives the Jewel, the prism effect.

Wash the bolt in hot soapy water to remove the oily, laping compound from the bolt. Clean out the firing pin slot, and ejector slot, and hole. Wipe & blow dry.

Finally the finished product! A beauty it is. This is my first, maybe not my best, but a beauty non-the less. :D
