Not recommended for .17Mach2 or Hyper Velocity ammo!
This modification makes your action much smoother and more reliable for cycling Sub-Sonic ammo. It raises the mechanical advantage in cocking the hammer, by moving the bolts point of impact higher up on the hammer. Several of you have already completed this mod with very good results. I used a belt sander at work to chamfer the bottom lug just under the bolt stop hole. I left about .040“, but .025“ is better. You can use about any type of sander. The Ruger 10/22 bolt is very hard, so hand filing is not worth the effort. Next is to smooth up sanding marks with varying grades of sandpaper. I did this on a flat surface. You can also use polishing wheel on a Dremel. I used toothpaste for lapping compound. Clean up, and add a thin coat of your favorite gun grease, or Teflon Dry-Lube. You won't believe how smooth the action becomes. :D
Here is the finished product. Now to order some subsonic ammo. :ar15:
