Hello all, I'm newer to the board, but have certaily been enjoying the information, you guys are great!

I wanted to see if anyone has had a chance to try the new SOCOM 16 yet. It almost appears to be Springfields answer to the the problems us Mini 14 fans have. It has a 16' barrel, an integrated muzzle brake and a nice rail for optics. At first glance it seems to be a more solid gun that the Mini 14 Ranch.

In fact, it appears that Springfiiedl is setting it up as competition because they are advertizing it as a "great ranch rifle." So does anyone own one yet? What are groupings like from a bench at 100 yards? Let us know.

Porter.

Hello Porter and welcome to the site. :) I must say that I was very excited to see the SOCOM 16 inch barrel M1A. Yes it may indeed be Springfields answer to the Mini14. However it is very pricey compared to the mini. MSRP will most likely be aroun $1350.00 or more! Still it's pretty darn cool looking and the added firepower of the 7.62 Nato round is alright in my book. I'd imagine it will be pretty damn loud at 16inches and a muzzlebreak. I've got an M1A Scout squad rifle and it's loud as heck!!! So lemme ask you this, are you gonna get one?

The new M1A SOCOM is a direct result of customized M-14s that SEAL teams have come up with for use in Asscrackastand and Iraq. Special Forces imployed M-14s in Afganastan due to the fact that the 62gr. 5.56 slap round were just not getting the job done, There is a compeny working with the TEAMS on modifacations to the SOCOM, this weapon has a retractable stock and makes for a tight little package of fire power, with the weight reduction to the SOCOM you can almost get away with using 30 round mags. Its awesome! I really look to see more and more of the SOCOM's showing up in more ground units in-country.

What is the diff between the socom 16 and the scout version of the M1a? Just barrel length? What is the length on the scout?

Seems like 18.5 is as short as I would want to go on a 308.

Heya all, Im new here also, but saw the thread and decided to sign up. Anyway...I ended up buying one of the new SOCOM 16's, and so far it has been a blast. I took it out plinking last weekend, and it was alot different feel than other M1A's that I have fired. As sombody pointed out, it is a damn loud weapon, but well worth it I think. So far no gripes with my buy, but wuld you expect any less from a manufacturer like Springfield?

My Saiga in .308 has a 18.5" barrel and it is loud as hell. Recoil is not bad, but, man, that thing gives one massive report. KTHUNG!

I understand that no SOCOM 16s are issued to any US troops. I have this SOCOM 16 in USGI Birch.

You will find 18s a.k.a. MK14 SEI, MK14 Mod 0 and MK14 Mod 1 issued to specialized units. SEALs, PJs etc...

The TROY SOPMOD conversion was picked up by a few, but less than 40 units were ever produced. Most are civilian owned.

Someday soon you may see 18", 20" and 22" M14s in the MCS drop-in stock from TROY.

The MCS turns the M14 into a flat top battle rifle.

The SOCOM16 was my first choice for a new HD rifle...saw one in my local GS...said lemme see that baby...sited thru the peep site...that was big enough to drive a VW micro bus thru BTW...and feel in love with it. Then I swallowed HARD when I saw the price tag...as of today 09 the MSRP is in the high $1700. Momma poopoo'd the M1A...for now I have a Tactical MINI 14 filling the HD rifle duties
