Took the new manufacture Springfield Armory M1 Garand to the range today. Shot at 25 and 50 yards with Danish ammo. Didn't take it to 100 because it was too muddy. Very pleased with the rifle and the ammo and the accuracy except for one thing. About every other shot the trigger guard popped open. If it just barely popped open, I could just pop it back in and resume shooting. If it popped open too much, it would allow the enbloc clip to shift and the gun would jam. I was shooting from the bench with the forend rested on a bag. Can anybody explain this problem? I have shot Garands before, and currently own and shoot an M1A and a Mini 14 with the same basic trigger group design. I have never experienced this phenomenon before. Please help. Thanks!

Sounds like there may not be enough tension on the guard. It could either be the stock is a little too thick so the trigger guard is not locking up, or the spring that controls the guard may be worn. It may also be the trigger guard itself. It is supposed to be pulled back a little then pulled down, the end may be worn. I'd call SA to see about sending it back.

Once it's fixed you'll love it! B)

That tells you how much I like this gun. It is basically a semi-automatic single shot requiring reassembly after every shot and I still love it. I guess I'll give SA a call tomorrow. Thanks!

You know I handled a M1A Supermatch that had the same problem. It was just that the gun was so tightly bedded into the stock that the trigger guard couldn't hold in place and kept popping out. I sent it back to springfield and they fixed it. Its just one of those things that they miss on the assembly line because it doesn't pop open in the box before shipping... Just send it back, they'll fix it.

Dittos on that last suggestion.

My brother had the same problem with his new M1 last summer. The trigger guard flew off after every shot. It has a lifetime warranty so he just shipped it back and they took care of it. Works just fine now.
