The sighting device you saw is called the hollifield sighting device. I remember that listing on e-bay. The device is rare it is shown in col. William Brophy's book
"Model 1903 Sprinfield" This book (if you already do not own it) has to be considered the "Bible" for springfield owners. The device used a dummy cartridge, a long rod, and a sharp stylus which would punch a small target. This was supposed to train troops in aiming/marksmanship with the '03. In truth seems like a rube goldberg device to me (my opinion). Hopefully this helps I can't believe noone else responded to this question. :beer: :usa:
