View Full Version : I have a chance to pick up a 03 date 1918

It's a Springfield M1903 with a 1918 barrel. The bore is in fair to good condition, and the metal finish is very good. The wood is in good condition, but it appears to have been painted "black" some time ago! Did some dummy do this, or were some painted this colour by the military?

My vote's for the dummy with the paint brush. The '03's were issued with an oil-finished walnut stock. You could probably strip that painted finish and rejuvenate the WWI-vintage Springfield, but check the serial number before you shoot it. If it's below 800,000, it's a "low number" receiver, and should not be fired.
