The first Mod that should be done to any 10/22 even before firing if possible is to replace the Bolt Stop Pin (Part #B-46) with a soft Recoil Buffer. Here is the reason why.

The bolt slams into the “steel” Bolt Stop Pin. This force is transmitted from the Steel Bolt Stop Pin to its “Aluminum” hole in the receiver. Not a good thing! In time the aluminum will work harden, and Cracks will form. This will scrap your rifle, as the Receiver is your rifle! This will happen even quicker with today's Hyper Velocity ammo such as Stingers, or Velocitors etc.

Note: If you buy a used 10/22 always check inside, and outside of the receivers bolt stop hole for cracks. If it is cracked back away from it!

There are many construction types, and prices of Bolt Buffers. Some are plastic coated steel pins. The one I use is made totally of a Urethane alloy from WeaponKraft. It also happens to be about 1/2 price the others.

Note: If you have a 10/22 with a Volquartsen Competition Bolt, check with Buffer manufacturer if a particular buffer can be used in your rifle.

What you can expect from installing a buffer, is lifetime receiver life, action will be noticeably quieter, and scope will suffer less Recoil shock.

To install buffer, remove magazine, clear chamber, and safety on. Remove barrel band, loosen take down screw, and remove receiver/barrel from stock. With Bolt stop Pin exposed, push out with small object, and slip in new Bolt Buffer. Reassemble rifle. You’re ready to take it to the range or woods for squirrels, cans etc. It is easy, anyone can do it. ;)
