Alright.

I was at the range starting to get my barrel broken in. I got 150 rounds through and I shot this target at the end of the day. 150 rounds take a long time if you're doing all this cleaning in between. I wonder if the guys next to me got high from all the Hueppe's No.9... Anyways. This is what I shoot right now with Federal Gold Medal Target, but I haven't bedded the new barrel yet either.

Oh! This was the first time at the range since I got the new Green Mountain barrel and the tasco scope.

I also hope that this might encourage people that don't shoot 1/4" groups on average to post in the contest. It's always a mark for yourself to improve upon.

Good shooting everyone!!

GermanGuy, I think those are some pretty decent results for having only put 150 rounds through the new barrel so far. Those are about like the groups I was shooting with the various flavors of the cheap High Velocity Federal ammo I was shooting. (Haven't yet tried Fed. Gold Match) My groups didn't start to find any real consistency until I tried the subsonic PMC Scoremaster rounds.

So, how do you like your new scope so far? What one did you end up getting?

And I agree, everyone should really think about entering the contest regardless of how tight their groups currently are. I'm sure it's been said before but I'll say it again... by entering it will likely increase the speed at which you improve because you have a set goal in mind that you're trying to attain. When there is a little bit more structure, such as in a contest, it is usually easier to find the motivation to really give it your all and work at it.

For instance, I always knew I wanted to work towards getting the tightest groups as I could. But it wasn't until I found this site and the monthly contests here that I got really motivated to focus on it. And don't worry if you don't have expensive rests or a shooting bench or a highly modified rifle. Heck, I just took one of my old camera tripods and converted that to be my shooting rest. Not fancy but it gets the job done... and I don't have a nice range to shoot at or anything... I just shoot out at our cabin. Measured off the 50 yards, set up target and have at it!

Plus the nice thing about the contest here is that there isn't any pressure and it's all in good fun. So if you're hesitent to try, I'd encourage you to enter. You'll have fun and we're all behind you from start to finish!!

Thanks SoulForce!

I'm not too worried about the group size right now, I know it'll come down eventually. Just need to do more shooting. And that's the best part!! :D

My scope is a Tasco 6-24x42 and I'm not quite sure about it yet. I love that it magnifies so big, but it was very hot at the range yesterday, so I saw all the heat dissipation, which in turn made the target appear... well... less than crisp and clear. But even with that, I can see the target so much better than I used to with my old 3-9x36. I think I just need to get used to the new one is all.

P.S.: I should update my thread in the picture gallery I guess...

Hey Germanguy. Good effort. It does take practice. Mine shot a lot better when I tore off a piece of cardboard from an ammo box, and jammed it under the barrel at the end of the fore stock.

Under high mag of my Tasco I can see the wind. I use 20 x to see how the wind blows, but shoot at 8x. I can see the bullets hit at 50 yds. Some scopes will change your POI just by changing the power setting. So when I'm shooting I leave it alone.

Not bad shooting GermanGuy. Your groups should start to tighten up once you get more rounds down the barrel. Just dont clean anymore untill the accuracy starts to falls off. Unlike a centerfire you want to "season" the bore. It will shoot better after having some lead and such down the barrel. Just keep tweaking and practicing and you should be shooting great too. -Carnifex :sniper:

Thanks for the encouraging words!

But I've gotta tell you... not cleaning the barrel for a year? Oh boy... I mean it makes perfect sense what you say, still it's so against what I've been taught. And I've also seen it happen to me before. When I first get to the range, my groups are alright, but they always get better as I shoot more. I always thought: Maybe I didn't concentrate as much when I started...!? It's probably a combination of both. And damn... it's gonna save me a ton of money for the patches.... :D
