This is my long range or "Mini Palma Rifle". About 2/3 complete.
1. Green mountain, .920"x 20" Stainless bull barrel, Free floated, and 3" Bedded.
2. Fajen Midnight Sporter stock, Bedded
3. Tasco 6-24x44mm World Class Target scope w/sun shade
4. Volquartsen Match hammer kit (Trigger 2 1/2#)
5. Volquartsen Auto bolt release ( Can make them for free now)
6. Volquartsen Extended mag release.
Shoots .623" average groups at 50 yds. with Kmart Dynapoints, best group .333" with barrel temp shimed.
Still have a little ways to go. Ordered Weaver type scope mount, as dove tail allows scope to move under recoil, Burris Signature Zee rings with Ecentric insert kit, Volquartsen edge extractor, also various Ammo types, adjustable barrel tuner, and work pre/after travel from trigger group, and lap bolt face. I dig this stuff! :D

Here is my "Hunter" about 50% complete.
1. Adams & Bennett .920"x18" fluted Stainless barrell
2. Fajen Coffiee Silhouette stock.
Am looking at .22 rimfire scopes in the 2-7x32mm range, with burris rings, and Weaver T0-9 base. Am concentrating on the Mini palma rifle first except when ordering I order parts for both. Will have more detail in a week or so.
Cajugeo,
That is beautiful! Now I have the bug to do something to my 10/22

Very, Very nice. Like the SS look. I just stayed with the blued on mine. One question, looking at the scope in relation to the cheek piece, do you have any problem looking through the scope without having to tilt your head? I had to give up a boyd's blaster because of that reason.
Any how nice looking guy...........:D

Hi Cajun!
Beautiful rifle! Really nice looking. Got a couple of questions though. How do you like that Tasco scope? Knowing that you don't put any crap on your stuff, it can't be a bad one. What was the cost on it? Also.... am I the only one who doesn't know where "Mini Palma" comes from?

Hey Germanguy. I bought the Tasco Targe scope before they went under. They are very respected over seas (more than here) the World Class Target had Japanesse lense (best there is) instead of the Hong kong (excuse me China) lens. No fault lifetime warrentee, It is very clear, and I paid $110. 4 months after I bought it Tasco was sold to Bushell, which had no over seas connections. Now I would look at a weaver for the money. I have seen a rummer that Tasco is back, although their web site is not back to do business. http://www.tasco.com/products_display.asp?...AME=RIFLESCOPES (http://www.tasco.com/products_display.asp?productID=148&familylineID=35&familytypeNAME=TARGET&usagetypeID=19&usagetypeNAME=Target+and+Varmint&producttypeID=3&producttypeNAME=RIFLESCOPES)
Your second question. Palma is long range shooting. See the 400 yd 10/22 post. What My target rifle is being built far is to explore the outer limits of the .22LR accuracy/range. http://www.long-range.com/

Hey Coyote. I just stuck a Bushnell Sportsview with medium Tasco rings on for the picture, but remembering your earlier post. I sighted thru the scope while observing my head movement in a mirror. The top of my head moves only 2" into the cheek pad to see clearly thru the scope. I will change the scope, & rings, but don't believe I will have to grind wood off my stock. I choose the silhouette stock as it is for offhand silhouette target shooting (head upright). Which is the same as my squirrel, & rabbit hunting. Only I will be able to get the squirrels attention by shooting the nut out of his mouth at 100 yds. before dispatching him into my crockpot, for squirrel stew!
My thinking on the stock is thus. A std. stock or Hogue type stock, my cheek weld is between my upper, and lower jaw. While the Fajen Sporter, and Silhouette stock with the thick cheek pad my cheek weld is my upper cheek bone. If I offered the lower cheek weld then I agree with your assement. However, I am very adaptave, so I can submit 2 different cheek welds when shooting different weapons, so it is not a problem for me.
Sorry for the poor quality picture. The stock casts a shadow, which gives, an improper perseption of the stock to scope distance. Am looking at upgrading a 20 yr old cammera.

HI Cajun!
Interesting report on the Palma competitions. I'd love to try that, I'm just afraid I'd have to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford a competitive rifle....
TheGermanGuy :sniper:
Wonder if my 10/22 would be fit for the matches?
1. Green Mountain .920 x 20" Bull fluted blue barrel
2. Bell and Carlson Anschuts thumb-hole stock
3. Simmons 44 Mag 1048 in 6.5 x 20 / B-square Weaver style base
4. Volquartsen Match hammer, shims and springs
5. Volquartsen magazine release
6. Auto bolt release by your truly
If I had it to do again, I would get the bull barrel not fluted. With the B and C stock, I need more weight. (Hummm...maybe wife's 10/22T needs a fluted barrel to replace the hammer forged barrel and I could order a new Bull for the B and C stock.........Hummmmmm.....
I have never measure my groups, but a dime will cover 10 shots at 50 yards, unless I get that silly pesky fly-er. And I have yet to get serious with shooting past the 50 yard line. If I ever get a digital camera, I will post a picture of the gun..........
For what a digital camera costs, I could build a new guns....geessThis is my long range or "Mini Palma Rifle". About 2/3 complete. What is the other 1/3 that your going to do to you rifle....

Hey coyote. I couldn't compete in the palma matches, as they are restricted to the .308-155 grn bullet at 800 yds or so. I just call it mini palma because it is for exploring the end of the .22 LR flight path, and because I like the name Mini-Palma.
My dime measures .704". Thats pretty good shooten. The bull is a heaver barrel than a fluted, also the laminate stock is heavier, than a fiberglass composite, for target shooting.
I don't have a digital cammera yet, but am looking at getting one. The pictures I posted were taken with a 20 yr old 35mm camera. I'm limited on closeups to 30", and isn't as sharp as it used to be. I take the roll to walmart, and have them put on a CD. for $3.49. It comes with software to crop, and adjust photo. (decline the optional "Index print" as they charge another $1.) I use the Adobe photo as I'm more used to it. I save finished photo to file in Jpeg format, then attach to post.
The remaining 1/3 of the project is: to replace the extractor with a Volquartsen edge extractor, an adjustable barrel tunner, ammo search for a consistant bullet with as much retained energy as possible, replacing the dove scope base with weaver type, Burris Signature zee scope rings with ecentric kit, and possibly a tapered shim under base. (I'm looking at 0 elevation at 200 yds, so all remaining 65 moa of elevation used to exceed 200 yds. (May need more, will see). Installing a trigger overtravel set screw, eliminate pre-travel, face bolt. Experiment with bullet mods such as SGT and/or hollowpointing to assist bullet transition from sonic to subsonic (may or may not help).
Also the whole thing is dependent on "no wind" so I will shut up. for now. ;)
BTW, you gave me an idea, maby in the near future, an on line 50 yd shooten match? Best group?, best average group? Maby 2 catagories, one for "Std" 10/22, and one for the "Bulls"?
BTW, you gave me an idea, maybe in the near future, an on line 50 yd shooten match? Best group?, best average group? Maby 2 categories, one for "Std" 10/22, and one for the "Bulls"?
That sounds good. I know there are e-mail matches going on. I just don't shoot that good to make anyone worry about my shooting. LOL.........But it would be fun anyhow.
Also thanks for the idea on the CD from WM......did not know they even did that. I have some really nice 35mm camera.....so will just get them out and do my shooting with them........lol........have more money in lens that I do in weapons..........ACK.........

Hey, I know you've probably been asked that about a million times, but is there a good place online to buy Green Mountain Barrles? Seems like Midway is pushing the Adams&Bennet barrels and "Cheaper than dirt" wants to sell Butler Creek. Brownells always seems a little pricey. Any suggestions?
Please give me links, please!

Their supply seems to be a little low now. I expect my Adams & Bennett, will shoot similar to my Greenmountain, but the Greenmountain cost $25 less. Will find out soon.
I am going the the Gun Show in Houston this week end to look at scopes. I need one for my Hunter 10/22, and some other goodies.
Also for your Green Mountain barrel try http://www.cabelas.com/ . (Just type in 10/22 in the search). I purchased a blue bull fluted from them and I think the cost was about $89.00. Maybe a little more now.

Dang-it you guys! Here I thought I was all set with the rifles I had. Now as I'm reading through these posts I'm finding myself thinking--Hey maybe I'll add a bull barrel, stock and so on to my 10/22. Then it dawned on me, I have to go to Mid South Shooters and now they're book marked. I knew I should have stayed in bed this morning.
Swede: Just admit it...........your addicited............you need a fix.......something for your 10/22. Sell your hub caps and buy something.............quick...........your starting to shake..........ackkk
I asked my wife about selling one of the kids, because I like my hub caps, to buy accessories and can you believe she said okay? Now which one. :D
Last year when we went to Montana to hunt antelope I brought my 10/22 to shoot prairrie dogs. This is a stock rifle with a 4x scope. I passed off some of the shots at over 200 yds. Normally I don't shoot that far with this rifle but the nice doggies would just sit there while I dialed them in. I think they were more used to the noise of a .223 and the pop of the .22 at that distance didn't scare them.
Anyway, I've been thinking of building one for awhile and now reading what you guys are doing I've started a new fund. Hopefully in a couple of months I'll be adding my $.02.
I still need to make that trip to Cabela's. ;)
I reallly like my custom 10/22. It shoots great at 25 and 50 yards. But if I was going to hunt with the rifle I would build a 10/22 mag. More power and more distance. My choise if I had the funds would be:
Ruger 10/22 Magnum, Volq. SS "plain" barrel, Kidd "Super Match" Trigger, Volq. "Exact Edge" Extractor, Dakotan Bolt Stop Buffer, Bell and Carlson stock and a Weaver V24 or KT15 Scope.
I think I just blew my funds for the next few years...........

It is tough desision to step up a notch. I was of like thinking untill I checked out the prices. To step up a knotch, I'll take my mini-14. Lots more firepower, and range = larger critters Yotes up to 300 yds. for about the same mullah. Now, if I happened to pick up a 10/22 mag at a pawn shop for a song, now maby I would choose your options, and the Variable weaver scope? I am building a 10/22 hunter for Jack Rabit size critters up to 100 yds.
:D
cajungeo
Well, that would be what I would like to do. For the price of that gun, you could buy a new 223. I agree on the .223 for the distance shooting. I guess that is why I have my AR 15 and Remington 700 Varmint 223.
Had a chance to get the 10/22 mag for $200 new/ but used. Good price. But when I added all the bells and whistles, it ran up into the $8 to $9 hundred price range. Plus if you add the price of the 22 mag ammo and even going further the price of the up and coming 17 cal., you can shoot the 223 as cheap. It just darn fun building those weapons though, hummm....if I could just win the lotto...........aaaaaaaaaaa

Hey Coyote, my hunter is for Rabbit, squirle size game at up to 100 yds. I shot a sub 1 Moa group of 5 at 100 yds with my 10/22 the next group opend to 3" cause the dove scope mount caused my scope to slide back on it. Am replacing it with Weaver T0-9 mount, and burris rings. I think the 10/22 will do fine for jackrabit size targets at up to 100 yds, but I agree the 10/22 mag has a lot more power at 100 yds, I would take a coyote or fox at that range with a mag.
Ya know I keep looking at my 22 box and it say it shoots a mile.......how come i can not get a good group at 100 yards.
Come to think of it the 22 mag says two miles, I think, that should be good for a good group at 200 yards. Hummm am I missing something here.

<span style='color:blue'>Ammo diet your rifle likes, bed it, tune it, scope it, trigger job, with match barrel, shoot from sandbag, bipods, or benchrest, you should be at or near 1" with no wind. Off hand less than 2" using proper technique. Again no wind.</span>

Plus the max range is firing at a 45% angle, plus safety margin to allow for terrain, and other environmental conditions. Max range is way more than max effective range.

Ok I shot my mouth off so I'm playing hookie tomorrow, and going to the range rain or shine to shoot in the std contest. I had to come up with something quick. So here it is.
1. Remove barrel band. (1 min)
2. Free float the barrel. (15 min)
3. Install Aluminium Piller bedding - Taped in a thin Alum washer. (2 min)
4. Bedded receiver with Mylar - Scotch taped the rear, and sides of receiver, folded under so it won't scrap off. (2 min)
5. Trigger job - Installed Volquartsen match hammer kit. (5 min)
6. Reassembled. (2 min)
7. A supply of business cards for barrel pressure pad.
Behold the beauty!
Will let you know how it shoots when I get back. I'd better download a lot of targets, I hope I can see good enough for those lil sights!

Awful purty!! Hey, in order to qualify to participate in the stock 10/22 category, what are the requirements for your 10/22? Standard barrel and that's it? Or standard barrel and standard stock and the rest is fair game? I'm thinking since I haven't bedded my new barrel yet, I might just throw my action back into my original stock, put the original barrel on and give you guys a good laugh... :D

Hey cajun. Nice quicky job on the 10/22 there. How do you like the Caldwell front rest? I need a good front rest but everything I want (Hart competition model at $180) is wayy too expensive.
cajungeo
09-02-2003, 21:50
Hey Carni. It is the Rock Rest, made by Caldwell. About $72 st midway. It is heavy metal, no plastic on it. Has quick, and fine adj. Front bag squeeze adj, and a front stock stopper. I like it. The front bag is about $16 more. Some times midway has them on sale and throw in the front bag for free. It doesn't move under heavy recoil. I also shoot a .308 winchester off it. I need a little heavier rear bag though. This one is all fabric. The leather ones are heavier, and hold shape better.
Couldn't believe how well my Quick & Dirty shot today. It shot a 42,43,44,46,46, & 49 pts. Not bad for these old eyes. It Just got better, and better. I can imagine what I looked like beating on the rear sight with a hammer, and punch, but thats the way ya adjust the little flipper sight's windage. I used the Dynapoints.
See its entry in the shooting contest.

i told myself not to come in here and look around. i have seen too many adds in the cataloges for the 10/22. well here i am for the second time. :(
i am waiting to take delivery on my last and final gun project which i started before retiring. it's that 45-70 enfield i mentioned in another thread.
well i got bored waiting and started to ramble around and got caught in the trap.
i'm real interested in the accuracy i can get for a few bucks. bull barrel, trigger group and maybe another stock if the bull brl will not fit original wood stock. i like the fluted bull real well. my 10/22 is blued and i have seen them in blue. any personal recommendations on who's stuff is best would be appreciated. maybe if i work on this i'll stay out of trouble.   i appreciate the advice :D

Thanks for the kind words swill. The stock is a Fajun Silhouette. It is designed for offhand shooting, as it keeps the head in a more upright position, and the trigger hand in a more pistol grip position allowing the right elbow to be held against the body for better stabalization, rather than sticking out in the air. I finished it myself.
I chose the 18" fluted stainless barrel for hunting, because with the match barrel it will be accurate enough even with cheap factory ammo to shoot the nut out of a squirels mouth at 50 yds, to get his attention before dispatching my dinner. Or later next year after I retire, and decide to get into some friendly Silhouette matches, Im already set up. It may be a personal pref thing but I like a heavier barrel for shooting offhand as I can keep the cross hairs on target longer than with a real light weight barrel. (try it yourself) The 18" fluted is about a half pound lighter than my 20" full bull barrel I use for bench rest, which makes it more comfortable, and quicker to shoot offhand. The main diff between the stainless or blue is down heah, it rains alot, and is humid. The stainless is more resistant to rust, than blue. This barrel is a Adams & Bennett, which I've heard is made by Green Mountain. Both shoot very well for barrels costing from $80-$100. I'm thinking of building my 3rd. Maybe a "black gun" with Bell & Carlson stock. Course as you already know the 10/22 is a do-it-yourself custom build. Thats why I love it. Customizing 10/22's can be adictive, so after I build my 3rd I will stop or try to get in a support group---now maybe this forum is all the support I need. :D

ok i have a little project started with my 10/22. i got me a 20", .920 grn. mnt. for $90 and a "competition" hammer & sear kit w/springs & shims for $55. this is the least expensive way for me to go. i will resize the stock and do a lil' mo' cuttin' here and there. i have some ideas on how to modify the stock to get a little of that "Fajun" "STYLE" out of it and still not be afraid to use it with full liberty. if i mess it up i bet i can find 10 to replace it right here in 5 mins.
i should get it by next week and i will try it next week end. i am also going to pick up the 45-70 enfield this week end. it is in the swamps in savannah and they tell me the hogs are all over the place since the water went down. i promised myself the 10/22 project will be it, i feel guilty taking advantage of my wife's good nature :( i will start a thread in the 10/22 gallery if i am allowed and if not i will run them in the mini 14 gallery. i will do a complete before & after. <_<

Swill,
you might ask our fellow shooter Bentbarrel, how he did his barrel channel on his original stock to fit the bull barrel that he mounted. His seems to have turned out just fine. Also, if you can't find an original stock in your neighborhood, I can send you one all the way from CA. No idea if that would make any sense in terms of shipping costs, but we can figure that out if it comes to that.

my main goal is not to cut up my exotic wood stock, i will save it so the weapon will be complete as new. i have some ideas on how to cut it down and make a target style stock. cajun's fajun got me thinking. i have some grinding tools used to port and polish engine parts for race cars which will allow me to sculpt a forearm and thumb hole (really it will be a slot) in the butt stock. i am having ideas about painting it red, white and blue. :usa:
i will be preoccupied this week end, i am going to the savannah swamp to pick up my new hog harvester. :D i bought a lee enfield in 45-70, which i hope to zero in and maybe get a hog all in the same trip. ;) my friends say the hogs are all over the swamp this yr. we have open season on hogs in GA, so anytime's the right time to hunt hog.

Cajun-
You show a Tasco 6-24x44mm World Class Target scope w/sun shade on your "Mini Palma" 10/22. I have the very similar (looks identical) Tasco 6-24x44mm mil-dot Target/Varmit scope -- I'd like to know where you got a sun shade that would fit it.
There was a fire that burned the scrub off most of our range, which looks ugly, but now we can see the long range metal plate and silhouette targets better, and a lot of people have put out more. Unfortunately, my favorite 330 yd target is now gone. So I am now working on the 380 yd, which takes about 2/3rds of the post at 6x for holdover. That's a lot of elevation, but it seems to drop most of them right in there in the dirt patch in front, which I prefer to hit so I can see the dirt splash. PMC and CCI Blazer seem to do well, so I guess the roiund is still stable, which it appears not to be when I try to shoot at 440. So I am guessing that 380 is near the limit of .22LR accuracy. YMMV, so I would appreciate you and others opinions. Anyone else shooting .22s over 300 yds?
Item 3: anyone building on the SS receivers available through Brownells? I sure would like a more solid 10/22-type with all premium components. Why start with a gun where I want to replace almost everything? This should be easy to build for $500 or so, not more then $600. Why is no one building a SS version, with the Lightning out of production?

Hey CW. My Tasco came with 2 sunshades. A 3", and a 5". Tasco should have one for your scope. Check out their new site, or E-mail them.
I haven't fired behond 100 yds yet as I'm still working on tunning, and ammo selection for the long shots. I just spent $1500 on a tooth. The ins. co hasn't come thru yet so I hope to be back into funds soon to order some match ammo. Have you tried the 48 grn scoremax? They should hold energy longer. I plan to try some and several other brands. At our range we have a 225 yd gong. This Christmas I plan to have my stuff up to snuff, an ding that gong. :D
The Alum receiver is sufficient with a bolt buffer for the 22 LR. If I had a Stainless Steel receiver as in a 10/22 Mag, I would look into getting a 10/17 barrel so I could shoot either. Good varmint rounds. ;)

My Pre-Ban Folder Bad Boy is Back!
Did you ever sell something and regretted it later? Well I sold this 10/22 4 years ago to a friend. Later I caught the 10/22 addiction, and regretted selling it. Well today I bought it back, as my friend needed cash for a rifle build. He took good care of it. So now I have some work to do. Haven't shot it in years. :D

I'll be upgrading all my pics as soon as I figure out the finer points on this camera.

It was a std 10/22 I bought in 1986. Bought the folder from Ramline for $19 that same year because it looked cool, lived in Colorado and back packed all the time. I could stick the whole thing in my back pack. The 50 rnd mags If I remember cost about $12 each then.
It hurts to think of how cheap magazines and stuff used to be. I hate how legislation and lawsuits make guns cost so much more than they otherwise would be. The plus I guess is that my guns all hold their value. So is that 4 10/22's you have in your collection now? They all look really nice.

I have 3. One was in 2 different configurations, So I could be in 2 classes of the shooting contest at the same time.
I know what you mean about higher prices. In 1968 I ordered a new Chevy Nova SS, with 350 eng. and 4 speed. I paid cash 3600. Now days that wont even cover the options.

My rifle was configured as an assault weapon "before" the 1994 AWB. This ban will sunset in 17 days. (Click on calendar for countdown). You may put a folder stock on your 10/22 after Midnight of Sept 13 i.e Sept 14 Provided your state doesn't have AWB laws of its own Louisiana doesn't have such laws.
Ramline, and Butler Creek make folder stocks. Note: for best accuacy a 1 piece stock is more accurate.
Check your states laws. Ref 10/22 Links Sticky, under Gun Laws.
