View Full Version : kkina's mini
Here's my 196-series mini, mounted on the back of my Jeep. Just completed the last of the accurizing modifications. Work done:
:) Stock bedding
:) Trigger job by Mike in Oregon
:) Smith Enterprises muzzle brake
:) Gas port kit, also from Mike
:) Cryo-treatment of barrel and receiver by cryopro.com
:) Millet rear sight
:) Modified factory front sight
Thanks to all on this forum who made this possible.
Taking it out to the range tomorrow to see how she shoots!

Looks like your ready to Rock, and Roll. With the Accu. mods you've done you should enter the shooting contest. Sept Rules will be posted soon.
BTW you have something to latch the mini down as hitting a good bump could launch it. :(
Thanks Cajungeo. The shooting contest does sound like fun, believe I will give it a go.
There is a latch for that rack, I just left it off for the sake of the picture. Thanks for mentioning, though.

How good is that muzzle break? I saw it in the latest Delta Force and was curious about it.
 :rapid:
I really like it. I know it was doing something, since after I pinned it on, brought down my POI by about 3 inches. After re-sighting I think it was basically cutting my groups in half at 50 yards.
Actually seemed to have much more of an effect for me than stock-bedding, probably because the gun is brand new and wasn't that loose to begin with (of course the bedding will be very important in keep things tight as the gun gets use).
I also think it looks good, very compact. Very important here in the People's Repub of Kali not to attract attention with something that looks like an evil flash suppressor.

Thanks, if I don't go the way Carl did with his break, soldering the washers in, I might get that one.
 :rapid:
One thing, you do have to drill the four little dimples at the end of the barrel for the set-screws. The brake will simply not stay on otherwise.

Plain is good, how much for the cryo?
The cheapest place I found was cryopro.com. Only $35, and you can include the receiver at no extra cost. Most places start out more expensive and charge you extra for the receiver. The guy was pretty responsive too. Recommended.
I'm going to say at this point I think the cryoing helps. Have had no problems with wandering zeroes or "stringing" effects since, both were a real problem before, especially when the barrel started heating up. Probably has little or no effect on group size itself, but I mostly had it done for the other problems. At that price there was no reason not to try it.

Did you have to remove the barrel? If not I'm all over it, thanks for the tip. I looked in to this some time ago but found it was to expensive.
No need to remove the barrel, just send them the whole barreled receiver. (You can remove the gas block if you like, although I did not.) Unlike every other place I looked at, cryopro does not charge extra for doing the receiver. Which is good, as far as I know only a gunsmith can remove Mini barrels, am I correct?

Looks like that jeep is good to go. Extra fuel, firepower, high lift jack and mmmmmm Swampers! What's the PVC tube for?
The PVC tube holds my collapsible fishing rods (sometimes I tell my friends its an AT-4 rocket launcher though ;) )
That's a Garvin Wilderness swing-away rack, by the way. Very sturdy, and holds tons of stuff. I added the brackets to hold my Mini while I'm out on the trails.
Had my Mini cryoed here recently, trigger is off at Mike's for some TLC. Will report results soon. I got the Smith brake also, had to drill dimples 2mm deep and 4mm wide or it flew off. Tried first with little holes and, then after recovering brake from out in firing range....
Another view, with a bipod attached.

:o
i used the same bi-pod you have. you might get tighter groups from a sand bag under the forestock. the barrel is flimsy and to use it for support could be destroying your accuracy. you can get a harris bi-pod and adapter for about $100. you can see mine in the galery, "swill's swamp mini". i do believe i am going to have to get the smith muz brake for mine. :D
 :usa:
Yeah, swill, I haven't tried it with that bipod yet, but I appreciate the feedback. Actually I bought a barrel mount bipod because I wanted to play with harmonic dampening. I figured rather than put on a harmonic weight, why not attach soemthing that is useful too...i.e. a barrel mounted bipod. I'm gonna play around with different positions along the barrel. You may be completely right, and the gun will shoot worse in all cases, but it's something to try. I may not like shooting with a bipod at all, and have to go back to sandbags anyway. Then I'll just save the bipod for "field" use. Will report in any case. Science marches on!

Hey kkina. Just a guess, but I betcha the best groupage will be with those bipods attached up against the gas block.
I have a 3 week old copy of Shotgun News. Ron Shirk Shooting Supplies has Harris bipods for $48.95

Don't forget the NO.14 adapter!
Here's the latest version. Rigidity strut installed, and my brand new Leupold VX-II! Can't wait to see how she shoots now. Hopefully this weekend.

WOW! ME LIKES! looks like an M14-M21 setup, just for the Mini.
Thanks Boogey! I was hoping someone would say that.

Kkina, weekends over ;) How is it shootin?
Gosh, you're so on top of things boogey! ;)
Well, you'll have to wait a bit longer for definitive results. Spent all day at the range Saturday. First time sighting in a scope, so that took a while. When I finally figured it out, I realized the scope mount itself needed some modification (Eagle mount for standard Mini). My mini apparently shoots unusually low, so I was too far over for a reliable scope adjustment.
The next day (sunday) I made a quick trip to the hardware store for a longer Allen screw. Figured out I could shim the mount in just the right place. This worked, but by the time I got out to the range it was late afternoon. By the time I had the shim adjusted, it was closing time.
Hopefully this weekend again. Can I stand the suspense?

Its good that you found a way to fix you mount prob ;) I'm going to start gathering parts to assemble a rigity strut soon, I love the way it looks on your Mini!(and others).
Deciding that the 9x Leupold I've been using is too low in magnification for the accuracy studies I'm doing with the strut, I ordered an inexpensive target scope with mag up to 24x (the Leupold will be delegated to a future deer rifle, so please don't feel bad about the $300 I spent on it ;) ). The new glass was ordered from Sportsmansguide.com and is an NcSTAR 6-24x with a 50mm objective. Judging by the badly translated instructions it looks to be Chinese made. On first blush it seems to be unexpectedly high in quality for a $100 scope. I'm not kidding myself that it is anywhere in quality next to a Leupold; what I'm hoping is that the dang thing holds together long enough for me to collect some meaningful range data. Anyway here's what she looks like perched atop Old Painless.
(Say, is that a sneak preview of the soon-to-be released Strut Version 3? I'm not saying!)

Nice one Kkina! The gun's looking better and better with age! Wait...doesn't that defy one of the laws of thermodynamics or something? ;)
See yotes.
See yotes run.
Run yotes run.
But you'll only die tired.
Hmmm, I'm in a good mood this evening. Better stop rambling 'for I get kicked off! TTYL   :usa:
OK kkina...looks good from here.
Well, I have only one question for now.
Has the sweet spot for the forward clamp now moved forward of the tool mark, and has it changed because of the different front sight?
Is that one question? kinda!
Thanks

If the strut shoots as well as it looks it should be a shooter.

It's always been forward of the tool mark.
You know I did check one of the original posts and saw that was so after I made the post. I think that I was thinking of rutro who uses the biathilon stabilizer at a different spot farther back. Did you try the front clamp farther back to find your best spot?
I do wonder why the sweet spot is different from one methodology to the other.
I've tried moving it forward almost to the front sight with no change in performance. Have not tried moving it BEHIND the tool mark as it kind of violated the rigidity strut concept (it's a strut not a tuner). Although there is a general area where the strut works best, it is rather insensitive to precise location. That said, I was thinking just today I ought to try it at a more rearward position to see if the strut will perform more like an archery stabilizer, i.e. soak up some harmonics through sacrificial vibration. Ah, so much to try, so little time...

kkina,
for the sake of just doin' it, what about the addition of another clamp. more rigidity plus less harmonic distortion/resonance = more wieght and......

That halo looks identical to the one I just bought...however in the bright sun, it is not bright enough. It has settings 1-7, and on 7, it is very dim in the daylight. I don't think I will be able to use it, and will send it back. Mine is made by barske, but they look identical. Any thoughts on yours? Mark

Yeah, for the price it's OK, but in very bright daylight it's on the dim side. The plain dot is useless, I put it on the dot-inside-circle and it's useable, but just barely.
Maybe I'll get a better one some day. Does anyone know if the Eotechs like the military uses has a brighter imaging system?
EDIT: Another thing I notice today is how a larger hood would greatly improve the sight picture by cutting out incidental reflections. Maybe that's why the better holosights have such big hoods.
:usa: Thats a sharp looking mini kkina. Let us know how it shoots.

KKINA that's some nice grouping!!!!
Can't wait to buy one of the struts.
At what range did you shoot?

The above target was shot at 100 yards with a 24X target scope rather than the holo-sight. Harris bipod and rear bag-rest. Federal AE 50 grain JHP.
Was that your NcStar scope?
I'm thinking of getting one. They seem very reasonably priced.
Is yours the illuminated one?
