View Full Version : 1911/ Ruger P90, compared
I have a Colt 1991 combat commander. It is the only automatic I have ever owned and the 1911 is the only auto I have ever fired.
I have been looking at the Ruger P90, because of cost considerations. I have heard good things about it. I get real confused as to how they work! The "P" series have three configurations. Manual Safety, (which seems like the one I will get) Decocker and DAO.
I don't want a DAO
I want the one that I is as close to the 1911 as is possible but I get confused. Can the manual safetyP series be fired first shot single action? How about the decocker?
Can either of these be more or less locked and cocked?
Please type slow, I am firearms retarded cuz I wasn't really in the military, only the Navy! heh heh heh heh

;)
i have had a colt mkIV/series 70, 26 yrs. I had a p90 3yrs. have p89 DC now.
for 45 cal. i think the colt feels better, shoots better, handles better, cleans better, smells better <_< .
the 9mm decocker (DC) is same over all dimension but easier to handle the smaller rnd. the fat grips on the rugers make it harder for me to control the weapon so the 45 was awkward for me. no probs with 9mm.
the decocker has no saftey, you may drop the hammer from single action but the double action is still hot(if rnd chambered).
i do not believe any of the p series rugers are single action only. :( i'm not sure if any are double action only either :(
for right now it's your choice, don't wait too long, may not have one later! ;)
Ruger makes a rough, tough dependable pistol. That being said, it is NOT in any shape, fashion or form a 1911. If you are looking for another 45 (non-1911) that is affordable, try one of the EAA Witness series. These are based on the CZ75 action and are reasonably priced. I also like the CZ97 but it is a bit larger and more expensive than the EAA guns.
I wouldn't waste my money on a Ruger pistol. Not the most ergonomic. Much better pistols for not much more cost.
of course, i do think it would be fun to get one in 40S&W to match with a PC4 carbine :)
I am familiar with both guns and I do have a 1991 commander. The colt is by far the better of the 2 and is much more compact too boot.

I must agree with most of the guys here. A 1911-A1 is by far the better pistol. However the Ruger P90 is a great and reliable pistol. Shotgun News ran a full cover and 3 or 4 page article praising the P90. This was back in July. I'm not sure how much they go for.....they list for 525.00,but Ruger's MSRP is usually way high. I would think a new one could be had for 425.00 to 450.00- not to bad in this day and age. If you wanna get one, I say go for it! :) You almost certainly will be pleasently surprised. If you can report back....let us know what you get. :D :usa:

I had every intention of buying a P90 last Friday I was trading in a few pistols towards it. I had one a few years ago and was sorry I sold it. Good solid gun but the front sight was too low I couldn't hit with it and I am usually a decent shot. Usually qualify expert in My NG unit. The P90 had sold and I was looking at a P97. Well I walked out with a Para-ordanance 14-45 LDA. The double action only trigger was smoother then Rugers single action pull. The 90s also have a long trigger pull and long reset. I love the Para. Don't let price be your only guide. I hope to get out to the range soon to break this baby in.

<<I have been looking at the Ruger P90, because of cost considerations>>
If you really want a 1911, you can get one for the cost of the Ruger P90. Rock Island Arms, for example, makes a 1911 in the same general cost range. I've heard good things about their firearms, but never owned one myself. There are a lot of 1911s out there that are good quality and don't bust the bank.
I've never owned a Ruger pistol myself, so I won't comment on the P90 specifically. I don't like the Ruger lineup (revolvers excluded) as a whole, though. I've shot a pair of Rugers that a buddy owns, and they just don't feel good to me. It's kind of hard to describe, but they feel sort of like a chunky plastic brick in my hand. A 1911 feels like a natural extension of the body, and just feels and points better because of it.
p-90 aregood guns but not nearly the gun the 1911 is.
