I am new to this forum and very interested in moving from the mini 14 to milsup weapons. Local shops have a Sar-1 (325.00), Romanian SKS (175.00), and some Norinco's (under 300.00). Is there a hands down favorite? Or is it like comparing apples and oranges? I have read and reread threads and find consensus difficult. Any help would be appreciated..... Thanks

For hunting and target shooting purposes,(IF that is ALL you want the rifle for) I suggest the SKS.
FOR ALL OTHER Take the AK!!!!!
The AK takes highcaps that are much cheaper and more reliable. They can be very accurate, and most have acceptable accuracy for the average shooter. They are very easy to tear apart, and spare parts are plentiful.....Defenitly alot more fun to plink with! And a much better SHTF weapon!!!

I think quadfan covered it all. The only dislike I 've ever had with the AK is the DAMN sheperds hook that retains the hammer and trigger pins, not that anything breaks where a person has to remove it. I have to admit a good AK is like the energizer bunny. I like the Chi Com Norinco's and MAK 90's a little better than the Romanian AK's. Sometimes you can find a clean used MAK for about the same as a new Romanian SAR.

I bought a SAR 1 and love it. It is WAY more accurate than my mini w/o mods and such. 325 is a good price and with the shortage of SAR 1s comming in now would be the time to get one is you were ever going to.

Thanks for the help guys. I have that need another gun syndrome.
Can I assume if I order a new Romanian ak (349.00) it will be a SAR? I found a used Norinco mak-90 (less than 300.00) with a nylon stock but I would rather have wood. Is new better here?????

I like the Norinco's, If you compare the two (Romanian and Norinco) you will see that the Norinco looks to be "better built" so to speak, and better quality of parts...... BUT the way the Norinco's receiver is cut (hard to explain, just trust me on this one) your stock choices are Severely limited! The original wood thumbhole (big and UGLY) or the polymer thumbhole are pretty much it! But with the SAR (Romanian), you have lots of "stock options" ;) :D !! But let me say that I've not heard many complaints about SAR's and most people are very happy with them.

But I'm with onegoodcop, VEPR or SLR93,SLR95,or maybe SAM7 would be the order of my choices, with the VEPR an overwhelming favorite! All you have to do is pick up a VEPR and ANY other AK and you will be impressed!! I know I was!

The Mak-90 looks great, except for the stock thing. Converting to the classic look poses legal issues...I think. I convinced my wife a needed an sks and managed to work up to an AK. I believe a VEPR would be a bridge too far. Homeland security begins with homeland peace. :D :D Decisions, Decisions......

You could always get a US made stock set through K-Var and the 5pc FGC parts to be compliaint and throw it in a chi com such as a norinco but then your over what you will pay for a SAR1 with ammo. All in all I really like my SAR, sh** it is more accurate than my mini and all the mags I buy actually work!

if you can't live with the thumbhole on the MAK your probably better off with the SAR. The SAR1 seems to be the best of the bunch and most trouble free as far as minor problems with SAR's go. I have SAR3's and SAR2's. The 3's needed the hammer's reground to hit the bolt square and I had to relieve the disconnect on one rifle to stop the trigger slap. I have been real happy with the little SAR3's and consider them to be one of the best deals going in a hi capacity 223 cal. rifle if a person does'nt mind about 20 minutes work.

I met a guy today that sold me a SAR-1 with a welded wire stock, sling, a 10 and a 30 clip (loaded) plus 200 rounds of ammo for 340. He only cycled one 30 clip through the gun. Tomorrow to the range. :ar15: Good deal???

I own Russian, Romanian and Bulgarian. I have worked on Chinese. I thought the receiver and FCG were very good. I wasn't too impressed with the barrel. The one thing I can tell you for certain is the Chinese parts (for the most part) are not directly interchangable with the East European. The big deal about this is most of the surplus parts out there are East European. Sure you can get Chinese parts, but the selection is more limited. My $0.02
