Hi guys, I'm quite new to AK's and am generally an AR 15 user. I'm planning on building an AK 47 with a flat receiver kit and would appreciate some advise from anyone who has attempted this project. Any advise as to how one goes about registering it also would be appreciated.I presently have a Romanian parts kit that I bought recently, (new, complete without receiver) and also bought a receiver flat that is completely predrilled including mag well hole and trigger group holes. I thought of trying the other receiver kits also, such as the 3 piece weld pack and the prefolded set without any drillings finished, but they seem to require much more skilled workmanship. Have I made the right choice of kit, as far as ease of completing the project goes? The flat receiver kit seems to require only 4 bends to complete it. Looking at my kit , I can't seem to figure out how the body cover will attach to the receiver. After the top folds are complete, how does the body cover attach to the receiver. I may be missing some parts from my kit. I haven't seen any good pics online of a top view of an AK receiver , with the body cover off. Also , most AK's receivers are assembled with rivets. Since I don't have the riviting equipment to use, are the screw kits a bad choice. And if I do choose to use screws to attach the receiver to the barrel trunion and stock tank, does this mean they will require tapping? Any help with answering my questions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

actionjackson. you might want to do a search on Yahoo or another search engine using the words- Roderus Custom Forums or Roderus Home Gunsmithing. The Home Gunsmithing Forum on AK's should answer your questions.

First of all......If you are going to register it,then why not get one that is ready to put together???
The whole point of the kits you speak of is so that you DON'T have to register it!!!!!!
The flat ones would be my last choice, because they have no rails welded on. And unless you have access to an industrial sheetmetal bender,I would'nt even attempt it!
I'd try to find one that is prebent WITH the rails already attached, and has the drilling template bonded to it.
But back to my first statement....If you are going to register it ANYHOW  .....Then go with a reciever that's ready to put together, you will still have alot of work in front of you! :o ;) :D :D

Oh, the receiver cover just sits on top of the receiver, and is held on by the front trunion and the square take-down button in the rear.

The flat rail kit is a novelty item. Buy it for its potential collectors value. To make a receiver out of it would be a challenge that an AK manufacturer like AK-USA would be hard press to do. Especially if you intend to use it. The geometry would be near impossible to achieve. I suggest if your serious about building one you get a receiver from OOW, and send it to AK-USA to have it hardened. If you still think that you could assemble it and make the proper adjustments like head spacing, then have at it. Otherwise you could send the parts to a manufacturer to have it built. Or you could just save those parts for spares and buy a SAR1. It will be cheaper in the end. I gaurantee it!
