View Full Version : G2-G2-G2
mine came in yesterday. i like the feel of it. i think it's gonna end up being a really nice outfit, after everyone let's go of the old model notions. i know they are super, but this baby is nice too. i worked the trigger by pushing the trigger spring down toward the frame to lighten the pull. works great and is really easy to do. now i've got my 30-30 AI barrel on the G2 with it's added strength, and my 22lr match barrel on the older frame with the rimfire selector inside the hammer. :D
by the way, i have a buddy with a 14"22lr match barrel for sale if anyone needs one. he has posted here-sdhandgunner

Congradulations!!! All I ever heard is: Thompson would never produce the G2. Now it is here. Will the existing barrels that I have fit the G2 frame? Can't see myself with one with all the stuff that I already have. Two new type contender frames and one old type with the firing pin striker in the hammer. Also, it takes the old single locking barrels and will not function witht he double locking type.
I wonder if I will catch the fever and have to have one of these also. Tell us more about the value of this receiver compared to the older ones. Some of us do not know. Thanks.
howdy splendid ha ha. well, i'm sure no expert, and i'd guess you know more than me. the existing barrels are supposed to fit fine. i don't know that much about the older frames. all i have, or have had, have been easy open models. in the older barrels, can't you change the locking bolts out to the double locking type? i was shooting the new 30-30AI barrel on a frame with the rimfire selector as a screw in the hammer. it functioned perfect. i havn't fired the G2 yet, but i've already fell in love with it. just from feel, and i'm coming around to the looks. i was deeply saddened by them doing away with the etchings at first.
G2 doesn't have to be broken down again to cock the hammer after letting it off.
it is supposedly stronger built(those ugly reinforcements on the sides). i think that will give a little extra security on calibers that are borderline "too much" for the old frames. i'm gonna use the 30-30 ackley barrel on it for that reason. even though i'm sure it's alright on the older frame. it's a super 14" factory special run barrel, so surely TC wouldn't put it out if they couldn't. you do have to go internal to work the trigger on the G2, wheras the old ones can be adjusted some by the external screws. but it's easy by pushing the trigger spring down toward the frame, or getting a bellm trigger spring with instructions from the bellm site. after modifying the factory spring, i'm satisfied with that. i'm too skeered to go further inside and smooth things up, although they look pretty simple for guys good at that stuff. if did, i'd never get it back together.
by the way, after i ordered the G2, i lost track, but i think it was around a month coming in. shorter than i expected :D

Thanks Kyode; I will probably happen up on one to see. Since my new passion is the encore, I probably will not entertain the G2. Thanks for the information.
Tompson offers an easy conversion for the old contenders, but they change out the trigger ect and It has some qualities lost from the older triggers. I have four barrels for it and will leave it alone. The other frames will accomodate my newer barrels of which I am using carbine barrels on one of them. The other is a collector item and is not for firing. (Steve Harrett 30 cal complete with the wood case-one of 500)
Keep us updated on any distractions with the G2. Thanks
The G2 is not really an improvement on the contender ist a way to phase out all the little things about the Contender that T/C lawers do not like. Like all trigger adjustments. And as for not having to cock the gun after letting the hammer down the gun was designed that was to allow dryfire without the hammer slamming against the frame time after time.some folks just don't read nor understand the manual. You can dryfire he gun all night just by breaking the action and not touching the hammer at all. the only time you need to touch the hammer is to fire the gun. Dont shoot? Just break the action and let the hammer down and its safe as houses
Personally I don't much care for the looks of the G2 either it reminds me of a mini Encore, another gun I never had much use for. I have more power in the Contender than I can use why would I want more in the Encore? Its heavy and ugly in my eyes.
I beleave the new G2 was introduced for all the wrong reasons lawer liability reasons not customer approval reasons. Just the fact that it took so long to get it released after the Contender was discontinued. Its never sat right with me. JMHO nothing more its probably a decent gun in its own right but its not a Contender.
Already they have introduced a barrel that fits the G2 but not the contender the 45 caliber muzzleloader. This I think is the wave of the future as more and more G2s are produced less and less barrels will be Contender friendly. Not now not next year but give it 5 or 10 years and T/C will be out of the Contender bisness barrels and all. Everything will be the G2 & Encore. Fox Ridge may hold on a bit longer but I would'nt count on it. T/C wante to distance them selves from the origional design what better way then to phase it out slowly ofer a pierd of years.
Makes me feel bad about picking up a G2 the other day, it's the same configuration as the Contender I had several years ago with the Super 14 in .223, I guess the only differences I have noticed are the change in grip angle, contender grips won't work on the G2, the fact that I don't have to break it open to recock it is a nice feature, as for the look of the frame, I prefer the contender to the G2, as for the trigger and accuracy I've only put about 40 rounds through it so far but it seems to shoot out quite nicely.

I got a G2 frame the other day and when it wouldn't cock, called the factory. They said that the locking bolt was at fault (my barrel had a 2 piece bolt) and said that they would send another forthwith.
Why is it that the 2 piece bolt won't work?
I know about it has to push back on the little lever in the frame, but why won't the 2 piece bolt do that?
