View Full Version : winchester 94ae misfires
I have a new model 94ae 30-30. Every 30 to 50 shots I am getting a misfire. This is with both winchester and remington factory ammo. The cartridge primer has a light dimple, and will fire if the hammer is dropped a second time. Anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? thank you , tex
That is a weird problem. It is strange that it only does it every 50 shots. There is a dent in the primer so the firing pin is hitting just not hard enough. You might have to replace the hammer spring with one that is a bit stiffer. Also when you load the round make sure you put it home solid. if the bullet is not all the way in the chamber then your hammer will just push it forward a hair. Not many people on here talk lever guns good to have a fellow 94 shooter here keep me posted on how it comes out. Also check out shootersforum.com they have a large levergun section there and may know exactly what the problem is.

I had the identical problem with a 94ae in 30-30 several years ago (the gun has long since been sold). I only noticed it when the gun was hot after firing about 15 or so rounds at the range. I attributed it to heating of the gun. Never attempted to fix the problem. I now have a 94ae trapper in 44 magnum and have never seen the problem occur even after the gun is hot.
to hanksr and valleypine, thanks for the reply. all three times the misfires have occurred, the weapon was hot and dirty. after the first misfire, i tried an endurance run after taking down the bolt and checking for gunk or particles on the firing pin. after the second, i cleaned the rifle thoroughly, and it functioned perfectly for more than 80 shots before another misfire. my theory was if a clean rifle would fire 100 shots without a problem, it was ok for my purposes. tex

I am a winchester 94 Buff too and i did have the same problem
with a Newer model 94AE Using New factory ammo after about 40 -60
rounds of 30-30 it would do the same thing make a light dent on the primer
then fire on the second try,First thing i did was assume the hammer
was not hitting with enought force to Pop a Fresh primer so i replaced
the hammer spring with a brand new one then cleaned the gun real good
with CLP ,I Took it to the range and the same problem started this time after 100
rounds I took the gun home and did a Complete in depth cleaning of the bolt,
firing pin and firing pin travel tunnel and the special attention to the locking block
Scrubbed it all with break free then gave all a light coat with the lube.
It has been Several Hundred rounds and no problems yet I think the
cleaning of those areas did the trick,I love my 94's :D
