Get a 10/22. I have nothing against remington, i love their stuff. But for the price and quality you can get a very nice 10/22 for little $$. Then if you get bored with it, just toss on a new barrel and stock and u have a trick small varmit or target gun. I'v shot a 597 but I still prefer the 10/22. Happy shooting -Carnifex

I Agree with Carnifex,The 597 is a Good rifle My brother has one and it shoots great with no problems, The Ruger 10/22 is in the same price range and of equal
quality,The deciding factor is in aftermarket parts and accessories, For the Ruger there is an almost confusing Maze of aftermarket Goodies for it at CHEAP prices.
For the Remington 597 aftermarket accessories are Few and expensive.Bottom line is the Remington 597 is a well made rifle and should last you a lifetime
But the ruger 10/22 will give you more options down the line

I have an M597. I like the way it handles better than a 10/22, the out of the box accuracy is darn good too. But the trigger pull blows bigtime, and I've had jamming issues. There have been complaints with the plastic mags, but there are aluminum ones out there. I have 2 plastic and one aluminum. One plastic one is junk, the other is the best mag I have, the aluminum one is so-so. If the mags don't screw up, it stovepipes on me, ususllay when I use a light bullet. The most accurate ammo I've shot out of it is remington subsonics, which have a different point of impact than other but group very well. I don' hear too much about reliability issues with the 10/22, I'd say flip a coin, but the 10/22 has more stuff available for it. If I could fix the trigger and jamming, it'd be a different story.
I vote for the Ruger also, for the same reasons as Deerhntr. The trigger in it is it's pitfall also. There are tons of aftermarket kits for it. The one that I'm most fond of it called a KID Trigger. It's rather expensive but WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT!!! I've never seen the 597, I own larger caliber Remingtons. Whatever you decide be sure to get a bolt buffer so the receiver doesn't turn into a paperweight. Weaponkraft makes the buffer of choice in my opinion, for whatever that's worth.

The M597 has a rubber buffer at the back of the receiver already.
Does the 597 receiver look like the 10/22?

I just bought one, well traded for it, and I really like it. I've had no problems with the plastic or aluminim magazine, and I've got about 300 rounds through it now. I'd also have to say the trigger on mine is very nice. Mine is an older one, pre-child lock integrated system, so maybe that's got something to do with.
I've shot my neighbors 10/22, and have no complaints. For what I wanted, I liked the reduced weight, stainless and synthetic construction, and the sights on the 597. The front site stands out for me much better than it did on the 10/22.

I just recently bought the 597. It actually came with the aluminim magazine rather then the plastic. I have only shot it once, but I would say that I am reasonably pleased with it.
Has anyone tried the after market hammers? I understand that they reduce the trigger pull considerably.
Also, does anyone know of a good match grade sight set that will fit?

Mine is pre-lock as well, but my trigger still sucks. If I can ever get the thing to stop stove-pipeing, I'll replace the hammer and maybe have a nice gun. Sniper: No, the M597 has a more rounded reciver, and the rail was too skinny for some tip-off mounts to fit, most did, but a few didn't want to. I like how it has a free-floated barrel already when you get it, they actually took a little bit of time to make it shoot good, but the trigger is a big turn off for me.

I have nothing against 10/22's but I would stick with the 597's personal choice as I own one and I think its great.:D

I would say 597 I have a 597 and a few of my friends have 10-22's. I've shot them both and I do like the 597 better and it is more accurate out of the box than a 10-22 IMO. I bought my 597 for $100 new a couple of years ago and the 10-22's were going for about $150.
It is true that there are TONS of aftermarket parts for the 10-22 and there are about 4 for the 597 that is a stock, barrel, vq extractor, and vq or jarvis hammer and thats about it. As long as you have the newest mags it will not have the jamming problems that the 597's had when they first came out. The new mags DO NOT say .22 lr on the bottom. If they say 22 lr on the bottom they are the old style. Just contact Remington and they will have you send in the old ones and they will send you the new style back. I've done this with 5 of them.
I took my 597 and put the hammer and extractor in (about $50 total for both), worked the stock and painted it. Now I have a unique .22 for about what I could buy a new 10-22 for. I will shoot .50 to .75 groups at 50 yards with CCI mini mags
