I have a 12" Hunter barrel. I can't load anything better than the Winchester 300 grain factory load. High velocity(can't remember exact speed), less than 1" groups at a hundred yards with a 2X scope. I don't think the recoil is bad.

 i used to have one. .357 mag, 30-30, .41 mag, 45-70. all 14" t/c barrels, i won hand gun silhouette with all of em. the 45-70 was my fav., it can be loaded up or down for what ever you wan't. try not to load the high power hand loads, i had an uncle mike's sling and swivels on mine and the REAL killer loads would break the screw that held the handle grip on the frame everytime (the original t/c screw never broke). PMC's hot 45-70 silver line is ok, COR-BON may be too hot. this is a brute of a hand gun or a pussy cat, your choice, but it is a great shooter. :cannon:

spend the extra $$ and get a 16" with muzzel brake :samurai:

I agree with 243.

My T/C with 16" plus brake is VERY controllable, very accurate, and I can also use it as a rifle (with shoulder stock). Felt recoil is less than my 45/70 Marlin 1895CB.

I got one that's a rechambered 45 win mag now 45-70 - you can use either factory .458 or smaller .452/.454 bullets it's really accurate with 400 grain cast bullet but it does break forearm screws - it's a kicker alright. It's the only one that really used to flatten Ram's at 200.

I have a 14" with factory brake.I load 300 grain jhp mostly they group well, recoil is not bad.I have tried 300 grain cast bullets with several different loads and I can't get any kind of groups. The jhp bullets work great.Mine shoots the best with R-7 powder but thats mine.I loaded 3 rounds with the 500 grain hornady round nose once.I shot two the other is still on my load bench. Not much fun to shoot! The 45-70 is a pretty good round in the Contender but I keep loads in the Trapdoor rifle range.

wheelgun- you're smart in keeping the contender loads in the trapdoor category. Going beyond is a bit too much for the contender frame. It'll stretch. I don't know how many I stretched in the old days from new chamberings/experimenting. I still have two of the first S.S.K. barrels in 45/70 & 375 JDJ. I like 'em both but the 375 JDJ is my favorite. In the 45/70, I never did find any handload or factory round as accurate as the Federal 300 gr.. Haven't shot them in probably 20 years.

well i had to have one ,i took it to the range, and with cowboy loads the felt recoil wasnt bad,but anything stronger gets your attention and not an all day shooter,so i sent it toE,Arthur Brown and had aJPHowitzer muzzel brake installed, now it looks like something that should be on a tank, going to the range this week will let you know, they say it cut recoil buy 50 percent or more we will see

Did that brake make much of a difference?

well gentlemen i took the tc to the range and after sighting it in at 25 yards went to the 50 yard range and blew off a couple of boxes, the first were the 405 cowboy loads and with the new jp brake it was very manageable and fun to shoot so i stepped it up a notch and went for the 350 grain remingtons you still know you lit one off still had the muzzel lift some but was a pleasure to shoot and managed to put all my shots dead center, the brake works as far as i am concerned, next week the 100 yard range just didnt have enough time last week ,they did a wonderfull job installing it and reblueing the barrel hope this helps
